HELP! New to Mount and Blade!

Hello Gents, I have a few questions that I would demand you answer. j/k

Seriously though, I just started playing Mount and Blade two days ago and I'm currently at LVL 15.. I was wondering:

1. How do I hire more Heroes into my party? I only have Borcha(The prisoner that I set free). I want to hire Dranton and maybe the other guy in the Tavern in Zendar.... How do I go about it? I even have an empty spot open for them in my party space.

2. What lvl do I have to reach in order to upgrade my Vaegir Horsemen? They've been aching to get upgraded for quite some time, but it says I can't b/c: LVL is too low.

3. Can I give my men armor/weapon? I know I can give my heroes. (Borcha) but I was wondering if I can give it to my Horsemen?

Welcome to the Forums!

I'm a bit new myself, but I should be able to help with your questions.

1. The only two characters who can join your party as "heroes" at this point are borcha and the man named Marnid in the Zendar Tavern. Marnid will join your group if you bring him a suit of padded armour of any quality. The arena personalities are only there (at this time) so that you can examine their statistics for curiosity's sake and get some pointers from them. I guess that they are content with arena life?

2. I believe you need to be level 19 - five levels lower than the horsemen will be when they upgrade to knights. (Swadian Knights are level 25 and so require level 20, just FYI.)

3. You can equip Borcha and Marnid by "bartering" with them (as you know), but you cannot equip non-heroes - their gear is based on their unit type and slightly randomized within that.

In fact you can equip your ordinary troops with a Conversation.txt edit. How you do it is written somewhere on the forum (maybe in the mod resource thread). I used it and equipped watchmen with two-hand swords. You only need to buy one item for all of the units of the type to have it too.

First of all: Welcome to Mount&Blade! (although I'm not the first one to say it)
Although there are only 2 heroes in the vanilla game, there is a mod which allows you to recruit a lot more heroes. It's called The Magnificient Seven and has some more features. Since fortunately you don't have to replace anything for installing a mod, you might want to try it out.
