Help leveling troops

I can never get troops to stay alive long enough to be huscarls. Havent gotten one. Ive gotten some guys up to warrior but they seem to die off, even when i have an army of 100+. Help?

Did your put up your and your companion training skills as high as you can? It's a long time from vet to huscarl, but warrior to vet is pretty quick with good trainer skill and vets are pretty survivable.

Yeah, me and each of my companions (Lezalit, bunduk, nizar, borcha) have atleast 3+ training... They only seem to work on recruits tho..

What level are you and your companions. Training only works for faction troops who are below the level of a potential trainer, so if you are at level 12, only troops below level 12 will get benefit from your training ability. Coulf be your problem since even Nord veterans are fairly high level.

Try to get Jeremus (or anyone else for that matter) with plenty of surgery. Also make sure you (and companions) are high enough level to train people, as in, you are a level higher than the level of the unit you want to train.

Only way to level companions faster would be to get into more battles, the whole party gets experience at end of battle (that will help with leveling your troops up too provided they don't die) I think companions getting kills gives them experience too in the same way you get exp for killing enemy. Even this way is going to be slow but if you have a couple of companions you'll have 1 or 2 leveling up every other battle or something like that depending on the size of the enemy army.

A pretty good way to level companions is to complete quests. You'll get some amount of experience, and that same amount will be spread out to all your troops equally.

So take the "Destroy the Bandit lair" quests. I think they give you 3000 experience, but I can't remember for sure. Anyway, if you had three companions, each would get 1000 experience for being in your party while your complete a quest. This is mainly good for your non-combatants like Jeremus who aren't going to see much battle and can't get experience as well, so keep in mind that if you have too many companions the experience gets spread out a little to thinly, so if you want to train up your surgeon, you might want to let go of everyone else for the time being.

Another good quest off the top of my head is the "Rescue the Lord quest" (have the villagers of the castle/town's associated village start a fire for an easy time). Both of these quests can be tracked by asking guild masters for work.

Generally what I've found is you start off like this. You get a bunch of recruits (Max you can carry) and then as your better units start developing, you set them to the lowest part of your party so they don't appear often. After your first battle you'll lose some recruits, but some recruits will level, you set those to the bottom and then go get some more recruits. The next battle you'll lose some recruits but then you'll get some more high level troops, and your previous high level troops will go up, etc, and so forth. In my recent game I've just barely rounded out to a practically all Swadian Knight army with 45 Swadian knights and about 12 new recruits to replace the units I've lost to get there.

Trying to quickly level up troops early on can be a bit painful, but it's not impossible. There are good suggestions here already (quests, medic companion) to which I would add, don't forget about the training fields! They're not super effective but they're good for getting a level or two if you're desperate.

Also, keep increasing that trainer skill. I've got 5 or 6 companions now with trainer from 4-6 each, and I can get tier 4 soldiers out of recruits in three days just from trainer XP. Remember that the trainer has to be higher level than the trainee, so keep your companions at the top of your party list so they fight in every battle.

How do you catch bandits with 40 recruits in tow though? Personally I think it's safer to increase your party size slowly (not to mention better morale, less food needed), so that you have some veterans toughening the line up alongside your recruits - a whole bunch of recruits will not catch the typical bandit band, but will be butchered by anything above that level (lords, seas raiders).

If you get the bandit hideout mission, or even if you just stumble across the hideout, you can wait right on it rather than destroying it right away. When you do this, at first the bandits will run away if your party is too powerful, but after a few days they'll NEED to get into their hideout so they'll eventually attack you. You can fight lots of bandits this way without having to catch them. Warning, when they finally do attack it'll be in high numbers, so you will be swamped.

Is there a good way to find bandit hideouts?

Bandits usually patrol around the villages, when you see some bandits are going far from the village, you should follow them UNNOTICED, and find out their lairs. I use this tactic and it is works.

A high Tracking skill helps.

Forest bandits hide in woods near suno, steepe bandits around ichamur, mountain bandits right next to any mountain, desert bandits between durquba and ahmerrad and to the right (dont be sneaky trying to avoid them, you just end upfighting 200 of them at once), sea raiders near rivacheg.

Thats where all the bandit spots i know of, might be more though

And Borcha have it. Taking him to your group will help you a lot.
