Helmet Graphics

I was wondering, is it possible to include an option to turn off the helmet graphic? Ie, if you have this option turned on, your avatar will look as if he or she is not wearing a helm, even if they are.

I personally prefer the way my character looks without her helm, but this isn't exactly practical in the heat of combat, as it makes her too vulnerable.

Thoughts, people?

Wear a glass helmet.

Otherwise, this would probably be very easy to implement (though I know next to nothing about programming and game development), and even though I wouldn't use it, having the option certainly would be nice.

I just highly doubt it's a priority at the moment.

I think this has to be the the dumest suggestion ever posted here ever.
If you don't like the look of the helmet then don't wear it.If you wan't the protection then wear it.You can't have both.I challange any to find a dumber suggestion then this.

Don't mean to be rude velax but this is just really bad.

Actually, there are games out there that already have this option, powerg8, World of Warcraft for one. It allows people to further customise the way their character looks without having to sacrifice protection. I don't see how that can be a bad thing.

For those that say it detracts from the realism, then simply don't use it. If you leave the option turned off, then you can play in exactly the same way you do now. This is a single player game, so other people having the option turned on affects you not at all.

While I'm itching to respond to your insulting post in kind, powerg8, I'll instead just limit myself to telling you that if you don't have anything constructive to add, don't post. I asked for people's thoughts, not meaningless insults from children.

I think I might understand what Velax's point is:

Our hero's helmet makes him/her relatively anonymous.

Even if that's not Velax's point, it's mine. Remember when we first started in M&B, we would customize our heroes faces? What was the point?

I'd have this huntress hero similar to Xena but put her in a suit of armor and Nordic helmet? She looks just like anybody else. Obviously, that's realistic but it sure makes the face generator ability of M&B irrelevant.

Actually I don't see a good way around it. Going helmetless in combat is just too high a price to pay for individuality. After awhile though, it doesn't matter what you look like anyway, but it might have been cool if we not only fought heroically but looked good doing it.

I hadn't actually thought of that, but it is certainly another good reason for having the option of turning off the helmet graphic. We are meant to be the hero, after all, not another one of the rank-and-file (no offense to the rank-and-file, of course, they do their job of being meat-shields most admirably).

(wow, and people say I'm rude - yet I never openly insult anybody in such a manner.)

It is not a bad idea at all, and one that I myself would like to be implemented. It could be a three way toggle:

  • 0 - default, helmets always displayed
1 - helmets only displayed in battle
    2 - helmets never displayed

If the toggle is set at 1, then the helmets could be invisible when in town, as well as you speak to your heroes in the party menu.

As Strange states, it diminishes the relevance of being able to alter the face. I enjoyed modifying the hero's face when I was new, yet wondered at the purpose in covering faces with the helmets when not in combat.

Personally, I wear the black beanie because I like to see the faces. I carry around the helmet in my inventory just in case I run into more trouble than I can handle, but this is yet to happen.

Thoughts, people?

An easy solution I used in Morrowind was to make a new helmet with exactly the same stats as the strongest helmet in my possession, except use one of the hair models as the graphic. That way, despite powerg8's protestations, I did indeed have both the look and the protection.

So essentially my suggestion is this: find a way to make the helmet use the hair model.

If you make a new armour, rather than replace an existing helmet, then you will have less chance of having NPCs running around with your hair

(Making the helmet textureless in order to be invisible won't work as it appears that the helmet overrides your hair, otherwise you would be getting long hair poking out underneith your helmet.)

I messed around with the textures a little, but all I managed to do was give myself a blonde helmet (which was rather amusing). I think it must have something to do with the .rsf files, but buggering around with meshes might be a little beyond my very amateur modding ability.

i dont know if M&B supports alpha channel but you just set the helmet skin to alpha channel and you should be able to see under it. Although....i have a sneaking suspision that when wearing a helmit the hair is removed.

Ok so I was wrong  ,I realy did find a dumer suggestion banck on like page 3 or somthing but any way,I guess if you whan't your guy to have some look you should be able to do that.I won't post just to be rude anymore even tho this is the first time I have done it.

Sorry Velax

*gets on nee and begs for forgivnes of the community*
