Heavy bastard vs. 2h sword - what's the difference?

Except for being able to use shield aswell. Stats-wise 2h sword is better all the way while it has same speed. Am I missing something?

Yeah, that's my point. Better all the way so what would be thereason to use heavy bastard? Especially since it sucks when used with a shield?

Whenever i used swadians i use bastard sword and get some armor, whenever im in a fight i put my shield on my back and slice the enemy apart. Second round i upgrade my shield to stop the archers from breaking my shield easily and the same as round one i remove the shield when fighting. Third round i upgrade my armor and change to the two handed sword.

Basically bastard sword has the same effect as a 2 handed sword at the start of the game where people still have low tier armor, so you could use the money you save from using a bastard sword to get some quick armor. Later on when the enemy is getting some medium/heavy armor i upgrade to two handed/great sword.

Are you kidding? The heavy bastard sword has similar damage and reach but with a noticeable increase in speed. In a fight between a two-handed sword and heavy bastard sword, the heavy bastard sword has the advantage.

Seeing as how it's cheaper and in the same line of swords, it doesn't make sense.

Bastard swords for infantry don't make sense at all, really. They're ****ty one-handers and stupidly fast two-handers.

I swear by the bastard sword. Once I can buy it, particularly in the "balanced heavy" variety, I don't use anything else. If you're in a tight spot or being attacked at range, shield goes up without robbing you of some kind of attack. When the need for a shield is passed, put the shield down and wreck fools.

In short, versatility is the difference.

Bear in mind that my comments come from a lack of experience in multiplayer. I have no idea what cheap, namby-pamby tactics those guys resort to.

That used to be true, but now the two handed sword has 97 speed as well. The heavy bastard sword is still excellent, but it needs a small price decrease to remain truly competitive.

Heavy Bastard Sword has been my weapon of choice since the very first beta.  Despite what Marnid says, they do have a place with infantry, even if it means nerfing their 2-hand stats and buffing their 1-hand stats.

This is one of the times that I would say, put the numbers down and just use it, you will quickly see it is a fully capable weapon...and no little brother of 2-hand swords.

Somehow, I've always found the regular Bastard sword much better.

It's down to personal preference, I guess. You're trading damage and reach for speed and cost.

5 points of reach is negligible. You can't judge it easily in a swing.

I don't think buffing speed on the two-handed sword was the preferred balance fix, but I suppose I can lay off the bastard swords for a bit.

Kickslash still needs to go, or at least be limited to one-handers.

How about a significant price difference? The regular bastard sword is less than half the price of the heavy bastard sword, if memory serves.

And no, 5 points of damage isn't really negligible. It's a pretty large boost, though you won't really notice it unless you're up against armoured opposition or specifically looking out for it. AFAIK the Power Strike bonus applies exponentially (base damage*1.07*1.07*1.07...), so the higher the base number you start out with, the more powerful it gets.

EDIT: I may be misremembering the exact power strike bonus, but the example still stands.

I forgot the "r" in reach.

And I don't think it's an exponential increase, either. I believe you get the 7% multiplied by powerstrike level and then applied to your damage. So 5 powerstrike = 35% damage increase.

Heh. Minor brainfart on my part too, I forgot the damage difference between both weapons and misinterpreted your post. IIRC the heavy has 37c and the regular one has 34c.

Too much SP, I guess. Balanced (heavy) bastard swords are ridiculous.

Tempered Heavy Bastard Sword.

Yeah, fear it. Tempered is what, +3 damage? Sheeeeeit.

Only a few days into my campaign I saw a Masterwork Heavy Bastard Sword.....sadly I didn't have the mind boggling amount of money to buy it.  Damn.

Meh, they're swords.  They do cutting damage.  Give me that lovely cheap two/one handed spiky staff thing any day.  Blunt does much more damage versus armor plus (in single player) leaves high level prisoners for me to ransom / convert.  Sure, 40some cutting damage will do more damage to a farmer in rags, it's not like I need to pump my damage per strike against farmers.  Against the high-end armors piercing is ~50% better than cut and blunt is almost 100% better.  Hence the UNHOLY power of the heavy warhammer (47B!)

Caveat: this is assuming the damage mechanics and modifiers haven't changed from original M&B

Well may be the case but when I'm already one shotting things with my axe I have no reason to use a different weapon(I can even use the thrust to get blunt damage @_@)
