What's the Heavy Banner in the shop used for?

I can't seem to find info about the Banner 'weapon'. I keep waving the banner in front of my troops but I have no idea if it does anything. I bought the 'heavy banner', can anyone tell me what i does exactly? (I take it it gathers troops or improves moral or something?)

Or if it has to be equipped can it it be equipped by a companion.  If that's not how it works I'd suggest it's how it should work; ie somebody has to actively carry it. 

On a side note I'd pondered changing tactics such that you could have one group: infantry, cavalry, archers, skirmishers etc per 2 points of leadership and 1 banner carrier.  If you just have one or two leadership points and no banner everybody just charges as a mob at the start, if you have a banner you can treat them as one group with commands.  If you have 3 to 4 leadership and two banners you can create two groups and command them etc, if you only have one banner the 2nd group would charge as a mob.  Giving a companion with a crap ton of armor the banner makes good sense.

The banner man would have to be flagged as the group he was with.  You couldn't have 4 banner men as group 6 and tell them to hold in the rear, each banner would have to be within a group.

You could even expand it so that banners allowed you to give commands and hornman controlled what percentage of troops followed those commands.  It would add some depth to tactics beyond 'Get T4 troops, loop cav around, smash opponent'.

Initially, it should run like food. You have it in inventory (it is more beauty use it too) and it add morale to party. I think you cannt see it in item description because it isnt food, but you can try delete it and look if your lose morale that week by it.

Would it be possible to modify the banner so it is equipped in the off hand? That would make it a bit less of a penalty to carry around and you could use only 1 handed weapons without shield.

Perhaps if you place the banner in 'weapons' slots, then your troops won't flee in battle

It is possible change hand here because banner is use like weapon.
