Would it be possible to fetch it out of his laptop and put it in another? Or does he need a new laptop first? Or is that first part not possible so were getting him a laptop (hopefully) so that he can restart everything...

From what was said I think the laptop is right royally buggered, the harddrive is nailed and enough of the rest of it to make it pointless trying to repair it.

As to shortness of cash, any little helps, cutback on the weed for a week and I'm sure you'll be able to splash out a fiver.

My brother's hard drive suffered a similar fate.  You can usually have it sent somewhere for recovery, but there is a tremendous fee for doing so - I believe it was in the hundreds.

Yeah, on the overall I imagine it would be more viable to buy a new computer.
BTW, we aren't trying to pay for his entire computer here, just lessen the blow somewhat. I think it would be grand if we could muster up 500 dollars over a couple of months that would allow him either to buy a cheap laptop or put it towards an uber one.
