Has anyone resolved this before?

Hey folks.  I used my title to trick you into looking here, because if I posted the real issue I'm sure most would be just as sick as me from seeing all the people who have had a problem like it, and would pass me over.

Having said that, I'm hoping someone can maybe give me specific help as to what I might be doing wrong, as it seems everyones issue is a little different.  I've had warband on my desktop and working since it was released, but now I'm studying abroad with my latptop, and after buying warband for this new comp., I keep getting stuck on multiplayer when it stops at "Retrieving server information."  I certainly have been browsing the other threads posted pertaining to this issue, but none of them have helped, even the official post's solutions above.

I have no idea what could be keeping me from getting servers, with exception of the fact that I'm using my universities wireless or wired internet, depending on the location, and in Scotland(if that helps.)  So essentially I wanted to ask two things; one, would the fact that I'm using wireless internet of my university be a problem, and if so am I able to fix it, and two, has anyone ever encountered a long hard battle with this issue that they have overcome?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried changing the use_secure_connection = 0 yet?
That seems to be the most popular fix right now.

thats exactly the problem i have even with wired connection! I keep stucking at retrieving servers bla bla and i tried Every solution there was on the forum but still nothing!!!!

What is the exact message it gets stuck at, "Retrieving server list..." or "Retrieving information from servers (n)"? Does it ever show any servers in the list at all? If you wait a while, does it give any error message at all, like "Unable to connect" or something like that? What value do you have for max_number_of_connections in your rgl_config.txt?

My first guess would be maybe your university blocks non standard ports, which is not uncommon. If this is the case, I guess it would probably get stuck at the "Retrieving information from servers (n)" message until all connections time out and not produce an error message. I doubt you could do much about it, the university is probably not gonna change its policy and I suppose you could tunnel all traffic through a proxy but for games that isn't really a solution since your ping will go through the roof. Not to mention the fact that if they blocked it, they probably don't want you doing that in the first place.

Yea Pawn, it gets stuck at, "Retrieving Server Information..."  then it just stops as if it found servers, but nothing comes up.  But its "retrieving" for usually like 5 mins.

im using my own internet and it gets stuck at "retrieving" for like 10 seconds and then disappears lol

MacAphee, but I don't even think its one that is constantly monitoring stuff.  Although I had figured it was my universities internet that was blocking the connections, I did, only one time, get one server come up, for M&M, and it was in Russia or something (and no, it  wasn't just M&M:Russia).  A faint glimmer of hope, as I saw it.  Could this be telling in any way?

If you run a server using the dedicate server package, you can pick a custom port... perhaps they were running the server on a common port, like http or something

Explain this again...as you would to an eleven year old.

Every machine connected to the internet has an ip address. Some protocols, mainly TCP and UDP, also use ports to send data around between machines. For example, when you're browsing the internet you'll be making TCP connections to remote servers, usually to port 80 which is the http port. Universities often don't like people trading warez or playing games, so they block most ports and only allow some common ones, like http, email, ftp.
When you set up a Warband server, you can pick a custom port. I think by default it uses 7240, but if those russian guys decided to host it on port 80, which is the default http port, it would most likely not be blocked by your university.

Ok.  So is there some program or whatnot that I can download that will allow me to connect straight into certain server's port numbers?

You can't change what port the server is listening on from your end. There's not much you can do about it. The only things I can think of are

- Ask your university to stop blocking ports, but they're probably not gonna listen
- Get server owners to host some servers on common ports, like port 80. I doubt it would help much, but you could try making a suggestion thread about it in the guildhall.
- Try hosting your own server
- You could try to find a nearby proxy server. You'll also need some tool to tunnel all traffic through it. It should allow you to connect to servers, you'll probably have a really awful ping though.
