Recruit
just started playing on highest combat difficulty, ai and damage recieved all on hardest, god damn it sure forces you to be carefull but its a lot more fun, i lost 40 soldiers 3 times alredy to 15 skull raiders ( i had recruits ), its really hard to train them and im so broke now, lords dont give quests most of the time, so how do i make money without raiding villages( i dont wanna go to war yet my char and gear and party are pitifull.) im just a commoner hunter.

It sure is tough when you try it for the first time. I remember my friend and I gave up and restarted a few times before we got the hang of it.

It is worth it to just stick with a very small party and kill looters until you have a small team to fight with. This can be a few mercenaries or maybe some recruits that you stick with for a while. I recommend training skill to at least get your recruits up one level (recruits are reaaally weak).

Sea raiders are quite tough. You will have an easier time against forest bandits or mountain bandits which are near each other. Looters are everywhere, so always try to find them and take them on! You can get money by doing quests, mostly, if you don't want to raid villages. Though, I think raiding a single village - gisim - is not a bad idea. You sell the loot for ~5000 denars which lets you buy some nice armour. Just be sure to look for "discount" items - like sturdy leather gloves, rusty armour (that is normally very strong) - you can find really nicely priced gear by just checking stats and costs with the modifiers. Rusty bucket helm will cost less than 1000 denars but still has better armour than almost every other helmet with no modifier.

Villagers are quite tough if you raid early. They attack you if you have like <10 guys and they come with ~60 villagers lol. You can beat them with cheesy strategies like hiding in a raised storehouse, but it is still easy to die. The main thing is that losing a battle against the villagers doesn't really cost you anything. You will lose more honour and relation with the village / lord / town if you have to attack again, but you don't get taken prisoner and don't lose any gear. In fact, you can attack the village again immediately - EVEN WITH 0 HEALTH! Though you get one-shot by things that even deal 0 damage haha. Anyway, this is all a bit exploitative, but the point is that attacking a village is quite safe in the early game and the gains are incredible at that stage.

That was my go-to strategy before. Now I usually just do quests or go for a tournament. Praven tournaments are easy to win at level 1 if you know what to do. You fight in the arena until you have 600 denars to do full bets on yourself and then you win the tournament and bump up to 4000 lol.

When the damage you take is on Normal thats sadistic  and of course realistic. In my first playthrough (I always try to play games on hardest difficulties) I was killing looters and then said "Hey, lets butcher those forest bandit guys!" Battle started, while I was charging, I took an arrow right between my eyes and fell off the horse. I was like; what the hell was that ?!

I have a similar frequent happening when I patrol late game with just my companions and I... Often will get the Tundra bandits on a small map (where you spawn in range) and have myself and half my companions wiped out by the opening volly

Ever since I turned off damage reports I have the same "What the hell was that??" reaction to taking crouched lance hits (its rare but it happens) I will be riding along minding my own business stabbing people in the face and suddenly I go cartwheeling off the back of my horse and start yelling at the screen for me to "Get up!" until I realize my health which was full/near full is suddenly 0...

Getting lanced sucks >.< lol

Javelins are definitely my most common way to get booted out of the battle. I, too, play without damage notifications - I don't have the allied icons above their heads or damage, exp, casualty or shot difficulty reports. I only have the target reticule because I can't aim without it lol. I see my character fall back, suddenly having become a unicorn thanks to some nords.
