Today it's Friday the 24th, which means it's the 801th birthday of Floris IV, Count of Holland. Born in The Hague in the year 1210, he grew up to be a count at his twelfth birthday. Official records say he died in France when he was mere 24, but we all know better. We know he went to another place, far away from Europe, to a strange land which we all learned to know and love. Let's all raise our glasses and toast to the man we'd all love to hire once we finally scraped together those 20,000 denars, who'd we all follow into battle, and who'd we carefully listen to once he talks about trade routes. I say:
Happy birthday, Floris! May you live to see a millennium becoming your lifetime.
