Was your also pre-WWII issue?
I had two, swapped later(edit). Earliest seems to have been 1943 I vaguely remember, with modernized parts - QCB which was really an advantage. There might actually have been ones from the mid-30s.

We had the ones you screw the barrel into, for training. They definitely exist.

The older models are definitely available for training purposes, those you screw in and fiddle with a bunch of keys.

Jeez, that looks like airborne rust rather than dust!

We stopped using oil and started using graphite dust. But in that specific situation, I don't know what we would have done.
