Has anybody figured out how to make units stay in assigned group? My crossbowman do not stay in (II) archer group? They keep reverting to (I) infantry group. Same as my companions. I put them on horseback and assign to (III) cavalry but they keep changing back to (I) infantry. Also horse archers I want to group with cavalry until I get several of them but they also continue to revert to (IV) instead of (III).

When I select archers as a group to move or hold fire, my character keeps calling them infantry. I have noticed the same with cavalry when selected to move or charge are called archers or infantry randomly. Anybody else notice this?

I've never had this problem. Except with companions and that happens only when they leave my party and then return. Are you playing an up to date version?

Afaik it's been like that from day 1 and it seems to be a bug. Yeah crossbowman keep changing themselves into infantry and it's damn annoying. I've also noticed that if you put a companion on a horse they'll automatically put themselves into cavalry group unless you change it. They may show up as infantry, class I, but they'll act like cavalry.

Good to hear. I thought I saw them charge with cavalry even when I checked and saw them labelled as (I) again. I'm sure it will get fixed eventually. The Devs have been awesome so far.

It resets every single time I start the game and driving me crazy. I use VI for me Elite troops -often shirtless (like meeself) so when I restart a game and forget to redo them, ill tell VI to go hide behind a hill for ambush but since it resets it calls out "EVERYONE!" like the danged Professional.

It's been a known bug since day 1. Every troop has a default group it's assigned to, and upon reload, it changes back to it. They'll probably fix it in a patch soon.

Its the same in custom battle too, you assign troop and position for everyone before siege but it reset everytime you start battle.

Some crossbowmen are flagged as infantry instead of archers. This is believed to be a bug. The Vlandian levy crossbowman is one such example. They always line up with the infantry.

They fixed smithing stamina not being saved right away, but they did not bother to fix group assignments not being saved at all. Group (formation) assignments not being saved was clearly the much more serious bug. Priorities, am I right?

There are two different problems from what I was able to observe.
1) Your group choices do not persist through save/load
2) Possibly more importantly: Using F6 in battle messes the groups up completely! I believe this is because the AI has also access to the F7 AKA Transfer command, and it just decides to split/merge groups however it wants to.

Point 2) is easily observable - at the start of the battle, take note of your unit grouping (just press 1 or smthing to show the numbers). Then activate delegate command on all of your troops at the same time with F6. Take note of the grouping again - it does not happen 100% of the time, but in many cases you will see that archers got merged into infantry and other shenaningans.

It can be partially avoided if you only F6 let's say infantry and cavalry and keep control of archers - it has to have control of both groups to mess with them.

Only 4 default groups work. Manual assignment is not saved and goes back to default on load.
Companions on horses are always assigned to cavalry even if they have 1 group in party menu. Also if You assign companions to archers the whole groups takes infantry behaviour as default.

F6 works only on default groups thus AI is forcing soldiers into default groups. Only addition is AI in most cases splits cavalry into 2 groups to protect both flanks. Same goes for autocalc battles. It doesn't recognize not default groups which may lead to defeat even if You have advantage AI doesn't know what to do with units in groups other then first 4. Transferring in battle is not the same as setting groups in party screen. Cause party screen groups add behaviour to units while in battle transfer decides behaviour based on troop type that is most numerous in group.

I think they have this listed as one of the known problems that they haven't gotten around to fixing yet.
