Anybody got any good recommendations? With Christmas coming up I've decided to stick one on my christmas list, but I would like to get the best I can for my money. I was looking for something under about £80.

So far I've found this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wacom-Bamboo-Pen-and-Touch/dp/B002Q4U4AY/ref=pd_cp_ce_1
It's quite close to the money limit, but it looks great.

Anyone with any experience in this kind of thing? Need some guidance.

From what i heard wacom is the best in this sort of stuff. Join Amazon prime and get free first class delivery too!

I don't think I use Amazon enough to justify the yearly membership fee, but if I ever start to use it more then I will for sure.

There's not much point in getting anything else than Wacom. Trust would be a poor man's tablet if only they fixed those darned pens. If you're looking for something to fool around with, Bamboo might be ok.

Cheers Merlkir. Your a great artist, so I know that yours is an opinion to be valued and respected.

Get Wacom, definitely. A Bamboo would be a good starter's tablet.

The first tablet I bought was a Wireless Scroll Tablet TB-4200. The pen was actually quite OK, the nip was still fine after 1½ year of usage and I think I might had to change the battery once. The Tablet was quite good for me as my first tablet. The main problem was that the plastic layer protecting the active surface got uneven

Now I own Wide Screen Design Tablet TB-7300 and it's better than the old in many aspects. The pen has improved over all - feels better, looks better, etc and I have not had to change the battery yet, though I have owned the tablet for some time now. The protective layer of plastic has gotten a lot harder, so it does not get uneven and scratched, but the nip wears out a lot faster because of it. I think it's a fine tablet looking at the price, but since I never tried a Wacom tablet I can't really compare them to each other.

Ah, sounds like they improved the pen. Mine shattered in my hand a few hours after I got it. And the battery would last for a day at most.

From what I've read when browsing the internet, Wacom seems to be the top choice. Not meant as an insult Hellbound, but that's what I think I'n going to go with.

I've also got a question for someone more experienced with this kind of thing *looks at merlkir* - Do you create/design an image in something first like photoshop and then paint/colour it or do you just leap straight in with the tablet and paint it as you go along?

It depends, sometimes I do a pencil sketch, but mosly I paint everything from scratch on the computer.

Wow. Can you recommend anything like books that would be useful for someone starting out?

Ech, there aren't that many good books I think. Jon Hodgson just released a book called Fantasy Art for Beginners, maybe that could be helpful. He's a good guy and artist.
Also, some of the Gnomon tutorial DVDs are very good.

Maybe ask Highelf, he's been starting out much more recently than me.
