Disciples 2 isn't that great. You should try Heroes of Might and Magic 2 or 3, both are superior games of that genre.

Or the Age of Wonders series. Probably the best in the genre.

Main thing I hated about the Disciples games was the sucky combat model.

Yeah combat could be so frustratingly random, or just involved way too much attrition even when you had reached the higher type of unit. It was too easy to kill enemies, and too easy for them to kill you. Didn't care for Age of Wonders as much as Heroes, as I recall. The number of units availible was great, and some of their abilities were extremely interesting, but there was something about it that just didn't feel right. I can't really remember anymore, it has been a long time.... I think it had something to do with how heroes were implemented (ie they were like mini-gods

Of course I still love both AoW and HOMM, but I've just always preferred HOMM. Though compared to either one of those, Disciples 2 comes up very short.

Hmmm i played both Homm 3 (both versions), 4, and seen 5, but i still would pick desciples over them any day. They lack the "magic" desciples has, and i dont think they are anywhere near as polished as D2. Yeah, units dont move on the battlefield in D2, but theres WAY more strategy involved than in homm games. There are many cool paradoxes and situations that can come up in Disciples; there are many units with awesome abilities, who can tranform into other units, and units who transform other units into something different, units with immunities and "shields", all this makes you really plan out your party. Im not saying you dont have to plan your party in homm games, but i think its way more intense and meaningfull in D2.
In Homm 3, i remember, all i got myself were 100 vampires, max necromancy, and then i just killed everyone......

Im a die-hard old fan of this game, but i know it's not for everyone.

IIRC in D2 combat was pretty much each unit striking in order.  The units weren't much special either - healer bloke, area of effect bloke, heavy hitting bloke and so on.

Liked the atmosphere, and like you said the artwork was superb. Just never really felt like the game had much depth.

No kidding, there I go assuming again . I based my assumption on two things, firstly, the name Europa (even the initials are the EU), secondly, all of the screenshots i saw for it were of europe and north africa. I just thought it was another anglophile game. I cant believe you can really play any county. I wonder just how many? I will have to look more deeply at this game. I guess I will wait for EUIII, I should have my new system built by then.

No, im just stupid . I live in probably the best place in the world for new releases of many things. California. Heck, I need to finish building my new system before I get this anyway. I dont think this old thing will do it.

Obviously you aren't one of the chosen ones )

I think i figured out why some battles would end with a stupid result: over renforcement.

Eg, i had 6000 danish fighting 8000 tutonic knights (i was siegeing one of their allies castles), and i renforced my 6000 men with another 12000 men from the next provence.
I lost the battle. Why? because i had too many units in the provience, and was receving attrition, which drastically increases the rate of morale drop in a battle

8000 Teutonic knights...? Highly unlikely.
EDIT: I was speaking in terms of realism. I don't doubt you could get that many in the game.

8000 soilders from the teutonic order, is what i meant.

There are no "units" in this game. There's infantry and cavalry. It is assumed that a certain percentage of each is nobility, or elite, but that's just assumed.

Sorry for the double post, but how do I invade someone navally? I can't land any of my men in Flanders, and Calais is occupied, so...

I think that if you click the boat once while in that sea, you select your land troops, and then right click the province.

Ah, thanks. Anyways. Why does everyone hate me?

I've been spending the last 20 years fighting myself in the War of the Roses (That ends around 1488, right?) and honestly have done NOTHING to the rest of europe, except Burgundy declared war on me and I had to fight them and all those northern german/dutch nations away so I could manage a white peace. What am I doing wrong?

Re-enactment of Europe being dicks to me ;_;

France: AW-HAW-HAW. England iz so stoopid!
Burgundy: Agreed. *declares war on England*
England: you guys suck *defends Calais*
Everyone else: France said England is stupid, and France is the defender of the Catholic Faith, so they MUST be right!
