Gotta love the new tournaments.

yes I know they are buggy and could be better but I really love them improvements that have been made.

Incase your not aware - the weapons and armour you receive are now region based depending on what faction owned the town it is in eg...

Khergits - Mostly hourse archers and javalins. Your lucky to get a sword (or lance) but guarenteed a horse.
Rhoddok - You get mostly crossbows and swords!
Swanadian - Mostly jousting and swords.
Nord - good old fashion hack and slash.

You get the idea.

I've just been travelling from town to town entering all the tornies that I can because now there not so bloody random.

Comments anyone? No sarcastic ones about my grammar please. I have been drinking. (again)

The mounted crossbow/sword Rhodok version is quite entertaining as it is well-rounded between shooting and smackdown, and with skill you can be quite a nasty foe.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong but I'm no longer able to switch to fists when all's I've got is the bow. This is extremely frustrating when an enemy gets up in close and you can't respond.

I like them...

They don't just vary by faction though, they vary by city too.

So, Sargoth is different from Tihr and Wercheg, etc.

Not massively different, but small differences.

Changing from bow to fists... it used to be '\' didn't it? Can't say I've tried it in the new version.

Ha! Your absolutely right it was the "\". Thanks, I was tired of getting *****-slapped without being able to slap back

Heh, yea your right they do differ by city. I just had a wonderful all jousting tournement at Praven.

I wouldn't dream of making sarcastic comments about your granmar...

Anyhow, its good information and good to know.

Hopefully I can safely take all of the Swadian tornies, where I can happily charge around on a horse, while ignoring the archer based ones....

i just love how you can actually make money from the tournaments now hehehe...

first thing i did with my new character was to enter a tournament (i was real lucky, first town i went to had them and then the second one i went to also had a tournament) and i made ~6000 by just doing the two tournaments...

Yeah, though it'd be nice if you could bet even more. Being able to make more in tournaments might alleviate the mid-game Sea Raider grind a little.

If you aren't afraid to do a bit of modding, you can easily change the amount to bet. Even without the module system. Just go into menus.txt and look for menu_tournament_bet and change the appropriate numbers.

The specific bit you're looking for is:
mno_bet_100_denars  2 2149 2 1224979098644774912 360287970189639680 30 2 1224979098644774912 100  100_denars.  2 2133 2 144115188075855905 100 2060 1 864691128455135340  .  mno_bet_50_denars  2 2149 2 1224979098644774912 360287970189639680 30 2 1224979098644774912 50  50_denars.  2 2133 2 144115188075855905 50 2060 1 864691128455135340  .  mno_bet_20_denars  2 2149 2 1224979098644774912 360287970189639680 30 2 1224979098644774912 20  20_denars.  2 2133 2 144115188075855905 20 2060 1 864691128455135340  .  mno_bet_10_denars  2 2149 2 1224979098644774912 360287970189639680 30 2 1224979098644774912 10  10_denars.  2 2133 2 144115188075855905 10 2060 1 864691128455135340  .  mno_bet_5_denars  2 2149 2 1224979098644774912 360287970189639680 30 2 1224979098644774912 5  5_denars.  2 2133 2 144115188075855905 5 2060 1 864691128455135340

Numbers to change highlighted in red. These are the 5 different arena bets - just change them to whatever you like. First number is the name of that menu option. Second number is the amount that you're actually betting (saved to $temp for next steps). Third is the text that displays, so you know how much you're betting. Fourth is the amount required to be able to see the option. I don't think you really need to change the first one, since it's just the name and isn't displayed, but I did anyway for consistency.

I multiplied all mine by 10, so the lowest is 50 and highest is 1000. Given the new costs of armor, it seems much more reasonable. Did anyone EVER bet 5, anyway? I mean honestly... 5 denars? What kind of pauper needs to bet that?

This works perfectly - all the other instances dealing with tournament bets reference the numbers set here - the one that takes, gives, all the displaying ones, etc.

-edit- Just figured I should say this is for 1.003, since some of my old posts have a habit of staying around between versions. It works for .960 too.

Link to other tweaks.

I love the new tournaments. Every culture different type + every town within a kingdom is slightly different. And the helmets are different according to different kingdoms. Only why Vaegirs and Khergits have same helmets is strange. Maybe they run out of ideas. I was just hoping I could by the helmet from Swadian tournaments but I didn't see it anywhere. So I guess it's a no go. I won about 15 so far. Made huge amonuts of money. When I retire there is no information how many tournaments I won. So lame. It's a nice information.

actually, depending on what choices you make at the start, you could very easily end up betting only 5 denars if you happen to start out near a city with a tournament

The new tournaments are great and it's nice to have some variety. I was shocked when I first entered one in a Khergit town and the first round consisted of about 30 horsemen racing around in circles shooting at one another. My character was pretty rubbish at this stage, but I managed to stay out of trouble and win the round, and the next rounds became much easier with fewer combatants.

I see other the other lords and tournament characters like Dranton have an easy passage to the next rounds. Even if you knock them out straight away or finish them off 3 rounds in a row, half the time they're still in the final or penultimate rounds. Whereas my character occasionally gets a by if I'm ko'd, but often I'm eliminated just like that despite knocking out nearly every person in the arena (that isn't wearing the same uniform!)

One thing I wish they would change is to give archers a short sword or one of those new small mace type things for close combat. They have two spare equipment slots just like crossbow units do, but the crossbow setup in tournaments gives you a sword. Whilst much of the time as an archer you can get by with just a bow until you find a spare sword on the floor, there are quite a few times when you spawn too close to another swordsman or horseman and you're killed before you can release more than one arrow. The problem is made worse if your entire team consists of ranged units and the enemy has swordsmen and horses. It's pretty much impossible to survive unless you have 10 in athletics so you can run away!

I'm also still slightly disappointed about the embarrassing mis-matched final rounds. I feel a bit bad if I'm mounted with a lance and my poor foe is on foot with a sword or a bow. Save for a freakish headshot at close range, they have virtually no chance of survival. It's an anti-climax, whereas I should be nervous throughout the final round.

Overall all though, tournaments are easily one of the more fun ways to make money and get stuck into action in the game. I seem to have spent more time trying to fight in tournaments than actually do anything else since I upgraded to v1.003

The new tournaments are awesome, but the horsemen-only ones need bigger arenas, badly. It's awfully crowded, especially in the early rounds with lots of combatants.
