I never thought of this before. But was there any night fight club during medieval era? I remembered seeing knights having spar or match fight during the tournament. But I'm not sure bout street brawlers having a gamble fight at the club. Was there any?

what of the common people who aren't knights? I apologies for asking the obvious question. But I'm wondering if theres any record or articles of it.

Actually I just made a ****ty pun.

But yeah, back then "fight clubs" would have existed. Men beating eachother up and people getting entertainment out of this/betting on it is an idea thats been around since the beginning of time.

Why would they do it secretly and why at night?

They could do it in a middle of the field in full view of the populace and it would be completely socially acceptable for them to do so.

Sources state commoner young men pretend fighting and dueling all the time, usually with wooden weapons...usually :ohdear:

Earlier tournaments can be both deadly and illegal,
they often involved fights to the death, ransoms and
some participants also hired foot soldiers to take part ...

About those commoners;

“On holidays the youths fight in the streets with blunted swords or staves clashing on shields. When they are older they go out into the fields with bows and arrows, indeed even the women go hunting with them.” - Dominic Mancini

I fear of what he meant by "blunted swords", if they were wood, why would the "blunt" part be necessary to state.

Knightly tourneys were never a secretive thing though, they were very popular and often had massive crowds of commoners cheering, drinking and betting on the warriors.

The popes declaration of them being forbidden is just mist in the air, nothing of consequence, they did not care.

Perhaps they meant both. Speaking of blunted swords, companies that make weapons for reenactors here tend to deliver them sharpened. Are we alone in this?

I should hope so, I've never encountered that here. I've met idiots who like swinging sharps around at reenactments, but never people just selling them instead of rebated weapons.

lol what?

Usually they are blunt and you actually have to pay extra to make them sharpened.

The only blades that are sold sharp are usually the fancy, proper reconstruction ones, not the steel wasters.

My arming sword came sharpened and pointy, but because of that, I cannot use it for anything else but very careful backyard cutting and movement practices.

People have no idea how dangerous straight one handed European blades are, because you often easily flip your wrist as you swing it, the velocities the tip of the sword effortlessly achieves are terrifying.

One of my idiotic friends accidentally caught his steel garage door with my sword, the high tempered and heat hardened spring steel tip of the sword went through the soft steel like through a cake, without any damage.

One can easily murder themselves if you fling it around carelessly, can't imagine it being used in reenactment or, God forbid, full contact fighting.

Note that I said "here" (i.e Sweden). SPQR is a company that deliver their blades fully sharpened with an exception for some spearheads.

Yeah, I am still hungover and completely missed what you meant with reenactment

My mind immediatelly went to contact fighting and combat demonstrations :ohdear:
