So I started going through my enormous Google Reader backlog, and I kinda wondered if anyone else stacks together a boatload of feeds and never reads them like I do.

How many items do you read through in a month (i.e. 30 days)? You can see by looking at the trends button in Google Reader.

I think RSS feeds are the little things that have bulletins scroll across the screen.

13 Aborted Embryos found in dustbin, homeless man says | Barack Obama hit by a bus - Critical Condition | Riots in central prisons througout Miami | Llama from Bristol Zoo escaped, evading capture. | Redcoat_Mic sucks ****, Oubliette reports. | A busload of hairbrushes have been lost in a field in Lincolnshire - Police are combing the area.

Gordon Brown has released a statement which renders the American Constitution obsolete, and King George the new monarch of the United States. | Reports coming just in welcome our Crustacean Overlords | A man has been found after drowning in superglue - Police are calling it a sticky situation.

Or blog posts, or twitter, or facebook updates, etc.

Basically anything that uses RSS to disseminate information can be gathered by an RSS reader, allowing a person to keep track of lots of things fairly easily. I don't use em though, I don't find it at all difficult to keep track of the things I'm interested without them.

Also, I don't see why the OP is focused exclusively on Google Reader, since there are many different RSS readers available.
