Grandmaster Knight
So I found a desktop for £377 but given the specs i cant help but think this is too good to be true and will end up not being able to run anything or whatever. Anyway I have little to no knowlage on computer hardware so any help on the quality of this rig would be much appreciated

- AMD FX 4130 (4x 3.80GHz) AM3+
- Asus M5A78L-M LX - AM3+, USB 2.0, SATA 3.0Gbs
- 8gb Kingston DDR3 1333 (1x 8gb)
- 500gb SATA3 Hard Drive (UDMA 600)
- 1GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 650
- 500w Standard power supply

Oh, and this doesn't include an operating system as my college give away copies of windows 8 to just about anybody.

another 20 quid can get me this

AMD FX 6100 (6x 3.30GHz) AM3+

any improvement or is it the FX rage as a whole?

From what I've heard (I've never used on myself), the FX processors are far better at multithreaded applications such as video encoding or file compression than single thread based applications like games.

I'm waiting for the next iteration where I'll likely buy either the highest or 2nd highest tier. The current iteration (43xx, 63xx, 83xx) are around 10-15% better than the ones you're talking about (41xx, 61xx, 81xx).

What you could do is get the cheapest processor available and simply pull it out and replace it with one of the newer ones (same socket). Just make sure the motherboard's CPU socket supports the amount of watts you need.

Alright thanks, those second iteration processors, any idea on how much more expensive they'll be?

The computer I recently built for myself uses an FX-4100 (as well as a 1GB 7850), and it doesn't provide excellent performance in games, but it definitely gets the job done on medium settings. I can play ARMA 3 with about 45 FPS and perfect performance on max in Skyrim. (Note that I am using a small screen, so that might give an FPS boost, but I think that's more related to the GPU than CPU)
If you're willing to try and overclock, it gets even better. The processor I had came stock at 3.6 GHz, but on the stock cooler I could safely overclock it up to 4.5 without even overvolting it. If you invest in a better cooler you could probably go even higher.  The increased clock speed makes up for the slight deficiency of performance.

I currently get 20fps on arma 2 on lowest settings, so yeah thats a pretty glowing review from my point of view

And I just heard that the 4130 was essentially an overclocked 4100 so I assume I'll have similar performance if not better, thankyou

I saw an article where someone overclocked an FX-6300 to 5.0GHz without touching the voltages. That's insane.

As for the graphics card, what I'm reading is that the (2Gb) 7850 is a little bit better than the 650, but the card I have is only 1 Gb, so that will cause a performance hit. Overall, I think you would get pretty similar performance to what I have reported, and I think that would be a pretty good deal for £377 ($500).

Back, so the PC I initially posted is here, running windows 7 all is well but...
I can't connect to the internet. It detects the wifi at 3/5 bars strength, asks me for the pin which I then enter, but after that it just says "failed" with no mention about why. And yes I've definitely got the password right

The desktop I recently bought had Windows 8 and 7 setup in a dual boot. The windows 7 had the same problem but it turned out it was due to him pirating windows 7 (but not 8 ). Non-genuine copies of 7 seem to do that, if that's a possibility in your situation.

Tell us how it performs, when you get it up and running. I'm curious.
bit late but I only recently set it up.

Arma 3 at ultra: between 30 and 40fps
Far cry 3 at ultra: 30fps
Napoleon total war ultra: 80-90fps
rising storm ultra: 70-80fps

Havent tried much else but im pretty happy with it
