Going to Chernobyl

Has anyone ever been there? Although I'm not sure I'll be able to, I'm planning to leave Romania for the first time and go to Chernobyl. I just love the atmosphere of the place, after seeing videos of people who went there. I heard the radiation isn't really harmful for a few hours on a rainy day. Do you guys think it's not a good idea or something ?

Get out of here, Stalker.

Okay, with that out of the way...
I had a college buddy who went to visit there (apparently he had a relative who was a firefighter there). Based on what he said, I'd recommend that you don't ever set a bottle of water on the ground and then try to drink from it. If the water doesn't kill you, your tour guide will.

Radiation levels are higher I would guess, but they are low enough now for many animals to live, and animals are not radiation resistant.

Explains the birds that have 2 pairs of wings and 3 headed dogs.

Heh. I live in the middle of a forest(sort of). So none will complain. I can just see the terror on those thieves* faces when they see the three headed cerberus running at them.

*Fruit thieves. I've considered mining the riverbank or putting up an electric fence.

Get a nice high powered airrifle and enjoy an evening sniping them from the trees

Oh come on, I need some real info here. Is it that dangerous ?

Of course, when my life may be in danger some time in the future, I always rely on advice from the people who frequent this forum.

And no, I know of someone who rode motorcycles through the place quite often a few years back, 2000 I think, and is still doing it. It still is only safe if precautions are taken. Roads and concrete surfaces as far as I know are safe because the lack of organic material leaves little for the radiation to contaminate. Also, even though you'll see plant and animal life, doesn't mean that the radiation levels are healthy for someone from outside the area. Animals born into a contaminated area may have a certain resistance to the radiation and probably have birth defects and other ailments as a result to exposure to radiation. Plants as far as I know are more resistant to radiation poisoning than animals, and are dangerous due to them soaking up contaminated water. Also as I said before, you really don't want to breathe in dust, since the organic particles can carry radiation to your lungs and cause respiratory problems.

I don't like exposing myself to unnecessary risk.

Besides, you can see dozens of areas identical to Chernobyl if you just visit some urbanized rural areas in Romania that are now abandoned. The failed combination of Communist town and rural village, paired up with the fact that everything is abandoned, can really be creepy.

And who needs three headed dogs when you have packs of dozens of feral dogs?

So basically you can find a lot of Chernobyls in Romania.

I am TIRED of romania. Trust me, there arent' such places. And if there are, they aren't nearly as much fun as you make them sound.
