Goals in Warband?

Hey all, I'm new to Warband, and I was wondering what goals I can achieve in this massive sandbox game. I've heard you can become King, or even own your own fief, or start your own faction, but honestly, I've never seen any official documents (as in, y'know, readmes or whatever) describing how to do that.

So. Could anyone please tell me what stuff I can achieve in Warband, such as becoming King, getting my own fief, etc, and how to do that? And if there's some sort of Warband-made document showing how to do that, where can I find it? Is there a wiki?

You can become vassal of one of the kings, get village, castle or town, you can marry noble lady, help claimant to get throne from current king and you can start of your own kingdom. Besides, you can do ton of other things like trading, raiding, doing quests for lords, kings, villagers or towns and so on.

That sounds awesome, thank you for the list. But, how do I do it?

Androsh, start out with talking to king of the kingdom you want to join... you'll see the option to offer your service either as mercenary or lord. you can talk to any lord and ask em where X are currently that belongs to their faction.

Thanks, that's a good start. I've tried doing that, but my current King, Sanjar Khan, says he only accepts people he trusts, so I guess I need more reputation with him?

After I join my king, what happens? What's the next step?

There is another way to 'work' for a faction. Doing quests for one of their lords (NOT the king) eventually results in you being offered a mercenary contract. I think the chances of this happening are larger if you have a few soldiers with you (I had 8 once, so you don't need many).

You can then fight for your kingdom and you get your pay weekly from the king. You can get prisoners and loot from battles and can raid enemy villages, but you can't take fiefs. Contracts last for three months, but can be renewed for another month each time.

The other way of working with a faction is to become a vassal. You need high renown to get offered vassalage. If you're friends with the king, the amount of renown you need is reduced. One you become a vassal, you're given the poorest fief in the kingdom, but you can now capture other fiefs for yourself and are now a lord.

Whatever you want. You havent any obligation to join a kingdom, you can do whatever you want. You want to be a trader? go for it! You want to be a tournament champion? go for it! You want to be a bandit racketting and looting villages and caravans? go for it! You want  to be a fierce warrior? go for it!

Thats the point of the sandbox game. Do whatever you want. No way is better than another (altough some are harder) just enjoy what suits the most to your playstyle. Have your own opinion on the game. Don't rely on other people to know what to do. Have fun!

To be accepted vassal you need renown (probably single most important attribute in game). 150-200 should be enough. Kings can offer you vassalage even on their own if it is that high. To get castle or town you need to have renown higher than any other homeless lord in kingdom. This means renown around 500-800 usually. Of course there have to be unassigned castle in your kingdom, which happens when kingdom captures castle from other kingdom. If you take that castle or town on your own, that helps little bit as well. Renown is gained by winning tournaments and difficult battles (especially those where you are outnumbered). You can also gain renown by hosting feasts but for that you need to be married and have a castle or town already.

To get married you have to win favour with lady or its father/brother. Usually both. Free ladies can be met at feasts and best way to get going is to win tournament which is held at the same time as feast, then dedicate victory to lady. Then just tell her you admire her and she will let you know if she wishes to meet you from time to time. You can get permission from her father/brother to meet her, else you can meet her just in discrete. Once relation with her is high enough (20-30), you can ask her if she think you can have common future. If she say yes, You have to gain permission from her father or brother. For which you need good relation with him. That is just general and most common way, there are other depending on character of lady and your standing (your renown, ownership of fiefs, honour and so on). Oh, and usually you need quit big sum of money too  that marriage gona cost you something. Bards and poets in taverns will tell you lot about this topic.

To help claimant, you need to find one (just ask traveller about their location) and agree to help him.

To start your own kingdom you need to conquer castle or town wile you are not vassal of anybody or to cancel your current vassalage while keeping fiefs you obtained from king. You want to have high Right to Rule or else it will be difficult to keep your kingdom.

In general you want to develop your character little bit before starting pursuing some of those goals. Just wander around, fight bandits, rise soldiers, win tournaments, get better equipment, recruit companions, gain relations with lords, kings, villages and towns by doing quests for them.

Thank you all for the answers, that's what I was looking for. I'll let you know if I come up with more.
