Giving Marnid Equipment

Please forgive a newbie question. I'm totally new to this type of game and only installed M&B a few days ago, having seen it very highly recommended on mathpuzzle.com. I did try searching the FAQ's and the forum but couldn't find an answer to this question:

Is it possible for me to give Marnid equipment? When we go into a fight the poor guy has no helmet or armour and only a club to fight with.

TIA for any advice,

John

When you're on the world map, go to your party screen, select Marnid and click the Talk button. That'll give you the "I have some items I no longer need..." option which lets you give him new equipment.

Yes, you can give equipment to any hero in your party when you´re outside of town.
Just click him in the party menu and then talk to him about bartering in the upcoming screen. There you can just drag anything out of you inventory in his inventory and he´ll use the best equipment he has.
You can´t do that with regular hireable troops and rescued prisoners though.

Thanks for such quick replies.

I've tried talking to Marnid before but the option was disabled. Maybe that was because I wasn't carrying any surplus equipment at the time or I was in a town. I'll purchase some gear and try again outside town.

John

Yes, you appear to be unable to talk to them inside a town.

Funny thing is though, if you give them items and they don't have much money, you have to settle for the small amount of money.

You take items off them to upgrade them and you have to pay them the full money ! Arghhh

Use the Extra Exp+Gold thing from Arena Mod then all the heroes will have enough gold to pay you for your items!

You know, I started with M&B on version 0.704 - meaning, "a lot later than many of you old-timers", and I have yet to regret giving either of those guys a bow or a crossbow.

How much of the "don't arm them with missiles" comes from experience with the very recent versions of the game?

He also seem to do quit good with throwing weapons! But you should always be on guard... they may decide to kill you, steal your gold and also your gear!

"why DOES he feel the need to fire an arrow as soon as he spawns?"

Good point - though, thinking about it, a lot of the force seems to spawn in conducting their final combat action from the previous battle - swinging at something and so on - as if the last intended action didn't get cleared from a queue somewhere.

Thanks again guys, clicking "Party" on the map display does indeed let me barter items with Marnid, and access his attribute points ratings display too. Is the failure to do this in towns just a bug or is there a good reason for it?

I tried giving Marnid a bow and arrow and he hasn't turned on his master - yet!

John

Most troops have the need to shoot at the instant he spawns on occasion. My guess is that they spawn before the map does or something, when there is a clear LOS..

I noticed that troops not only shoot as soon as battle starts but also very often swing their weapons... would hurt quite a bit in real life lol.

Marnid and even Borcha are quite safe with ranged weapons as long as you keep behind them. If you attack the enemy when they are shooting, well, your nice new armour soon got a plenty of arrows in it.

Okay, these bugs can be used for good too: I've seen river pirates throwing stones at each other, and knocking themselves unconscius

My guess is that your friends and troops (Marnid and Borcha) are not in the scene with you in the towns, hence talking to them would be strange since the engine wouldn't know what kind of background to put them in, or perhaps it would freak out since the main character would be talking to someone in a different location.

Or maybe not. But that's my conjecture.

Marnid and Borcha always lie about having no money because you can't fire them, I tolerate it because I think it helps morale. It doesn't help morale in the game I was making a joke.
