That was standard before 1.4.3. I save scum the start of every campaign, running around the map, hiring all the available wanderers to check out their stats before I start the game, so I've seen hundreds of companions and am very familiar with their stats.
1.4.3. has improved some things with companions. The companions lost their traits that were associated with each surname. I haven't checked enough data to be 100 percent sure, but 1.4.3. has way less wasted focus points and a lot more attributes that fit the profession. It was really difficult to find a wanderer with good attributes and few wasted skill points before 1.4.3.
Save scumming has taught me a few things I'll pass on:
1. 1.4.3 is a massive improvement with companion stats.
2. Leopardess' make great scouts most of the time. My current scout is a Leopardess that had an 8 in cunning when I hired her. Leopardess also come with a high rogue score to start as well. Mine didn't have a focus point in scout to start, but as soon as I dropped a couple focus points in scout, she started tearing through levels. In fact, she levels faster than anyone else in my party, including my main character.
If you're not patient enough to wait for level 1 companions to grow, that's fine. I support level 1 companions because they have the fastest growth rate and the highest potential.
