Give the veteran falxmen their falx back!

Knight at Arms
Even with the recent fixes to the AI distance calculation, the Battanian veteran falxmen suck. Not only are they the worst shock troop, they're also heavily overshadowed by their Tier 4 counterparts. They can't even deal with cavalry properly unlike the elite menavliaton. This is mostly due to their weapon. Giving them a falx (seeing as they're called FALXmen) would greatly improve the unit. They already differentiate themselves enough by having higher armor & throwables. There's also the issue of the aluminium foil helmet plaguing high tier Battanian units with its crappy 25 armor (iirc it's called the ridged helmet but I might be wrong). Give Battanian infantry units better helmets, change the rhomphaia to a falx, and for the love of god, please give the veteran falxmen a different shoulder armor, the current one looks and protects like an unwashed blanket.

The Voulgier also sucks compared to other shock infantry, but they would greatly improve just from getting proper shoulder armor, like all high tier Vlandian units (+ Lords).

If they could actually use the weapon effectively it would be pretty great, and that's what they're balanced around. TW really likes the hypothetical strength of a lot of things instead of the reality that AI does not handle these things well at all to the point of uselessness.

Even so, they randomly change roles from anti infantry to anti cavalry (though they fail at it) after going up a tier. I think using falx would suit them better, but that's my opinion.

Isn't the AI for infantry units mostly fine now in regards to distance calculation in melee? The option of TW improving the AI is always the best solution of course.

I just prefer the vet falxman having a falx as the name advertises, and for their shock troopers to stay as an anti infantry unit. Battanians already have anti-cavalry options in the form of oathsworn and mounted skirmisher (and the Fians ofc). Disregarding Fians being too powerful in dealing with most units, the Battanians don't really have any anti shield infantry options, and their melee units suck for the most part compared to other factions. I do like keeping the wildling as a foot skirmisher that's relatively weak in melee and the oathsworn as the standard anti-cav shield infantry.

Not sure tbh, haven't tried.

But the rhomphaia the Vet Falxman wields isn't necessarily bad at anti infantry at all. In fact it can seriously brutalise dudes if given room to swing. Its more versatile than just a pure falx if anything- you have both anti cav and anti infantry in one.

Also Battanian troops tend to carry throwing axes, so they kind of all are anti shield. I'd just buff the bonus against shields and make shields weaker across the board. As thing stand, you wouldn't even know that things are anti shield by the lack of shield breaking.

That's a big if, especially when we currently can't organize specialist troops dedicated units. You basically have to have Falxmen as a separate infantry group but it's a PITA to do that now, unless they're your only 2h infantry.

Currently limitations to organization of troops favors simplicity over complexity, and Falxmen are a complicated.

You can put them into Loose formation, spread as wide as possible. It helps.

That's true, although you would need to separate them in pre battle placement, which is not really ideal. This still doesn't solve the problem of the troop tree changing roles from an anti infantry to a (mainly) anti cavalry unit in its last tier.

I wish we could have a hybrid placement system where we could assign specific modifiers (like shield, or throwing weapons, etc.) on the party screen and units with a modifier would be prioritised over other troops with say, throwing weapons that aren't assigned a modifier for the pre battle placement system.
