So Girl Genius is a webcomic that is currently active and has been since 2002. It started as a traditional print comic but then was transferred online. It's written and drawn by Phil and Kaja Foglio. It's considered a staple of the steampunk genre, though the authors describe it more as gaslap fantasy.

It takes place Europa (Europe) in an alternate timeline. Without spoiling too much, the setting is based after an invasion of alien-like "Slaver Wasps" which take over humans and turn them into "Reverents" which are more or less zombies. The Heterodyne nobles, admirably referred to as "The Heterodyne Boys", effectively end the invasion by cutting off the head of the snake of the Slaver Wasps, they then mysteriously disappear. An important aspect behind all of this is the "Sparks", which you could think of us genius inventors. The Sparks are described as by the peasantry as mad scientists as they tend to end up burning down villages from their unstable experimentation, yet anybody who's anyone is a Spark - be it noble, artist, or scientist. In the aftermath of the invasion, with effectively both Humans and Slaver Wasps without leadership, Baron Wulfenbach, an old friend of the Heterodyne Boys, mysteriously reappears and cleans up the mess that is Europa by brutal totalitarian force. Wulfenbach becomes the unofficial emperor of Europa and surprisingly effectively administrates a world that is constantly at threat of being torn apart - either by squabbling nobles, 'Madboy' Sparks, or another invasion by the Slaver Wasps.

I'm currently on Volume 9, Page 67 at the time of this first post. I'd recommend it, though I realize it's not for everyone. The main purpose of this post is just to tell other Taleworldians about it and possibly discuss.

So far I do have plenty of grievances, if minor ones, but I'd still rate this at a A- or B+

dat gaslap

More serious question: I've never read the comic, but read a trifle about it. Is being a Spark just a title given to visionary types, or is it a literal metahuman sort of deal?

Being a Spark definately means you have some sort of 'gift', when Sparks go at it, they just tend to invent like crazy with little regard for reason. Be this a biological reason, nobody is quite sure, but it definately has something to do with the human brain and maybe its synapses. Baron Wulfenbach is the lead scientist when it comes to Spark research, primarily because he gets to perform autoposies on rogue Sparks, and it seems to indicate that even he's not sure why.

Just read it, Pillock, and all will become relatively clear. It's totally kickass though the art at the beginning isn't too fancy.

Currently at Volume 10 Page 066

I cannot utter a word without spoiling something, but like ..... there's just way too much mystery, I know it would be so cheesy and simple, but I really hope they explain everything @.@
