Getting Companions to read books?

I've noticed that when you put your cursor on books it tells you which companions have read it, but I can't seem to find an option to make them. Do I just put it in there inventory and they automatically start reading it? I've tried asking to exchange books to see if there's an option to give them one, but my character basically just says never mind.

Pretty sure their several parts of conversation that you say to get them to read. I think it goes something like I would like to give you a book then I want you to read a book. Haven't done it in a while but I'm pretty sure it went something like that.

Just look at it. It's exchange books, readable, pick which book, then go back and select i want you to read a book a gave you, then select the one you wanted. You can then ask his reading progress to see how much he finished.

Like I said, that doesn't work. I will choose readable books, my companion will say "Very well, let's exchange readable books," and my character just says never mind.

You sure their intelligent enough to read the book you wish to give them?

Yes. All my companions have 12+ intelligence and I have every book in my inventory.

Strange I had just done this and it worked fine. Might be a bug, not sure.

Ya that's the only thing I can think of. I'll wait to see if someone has an answer before reporting it.

I know this is old but I hate when I google a problem and the top result is a forum post with no answer.

My companion's inventory was full when I got the dialogue "Very well, let's exchange readable books," and then being forced into saying nevermind.  I went into his inventory and took an item, then I was able to give him the book.
