Getting around Steam's BS treatment to a 28.8k user

I have this problem, where I bought Warband from Best Buy, hoping I didn't have to go through Steam to install the game. My bad for missing the SSA disclaimer on the back of the case, but there's nothing I can do about that now.

After about a day of dicking around with Steam, I finally managed to get the game to install. However, Steam must download a  311.6 MB update1 before I can play the game. I can't even play retail release, I have to trudge through the "update" just to play the game.

It wouldn't be so bad if I could just straight download the last bit of data. It would take something like 29 hours to finish -- which I could pause and continue whenever I wanted -- assuming I had a good connection, nothing going wrong on Steam's end, and nothing going wrong on my end. However, that just isn't the case.

Steam insisted on downloading something else that I couldn't pause or even locate. That download managed to finish, but I still don't know what it is. Steam's servers are usually pretty ****ty to me, so getting a good download rate is unlikely. On top of that, whenever I try to resume downloading the "update" for Warband, Steam tells me that my download is "suspended," causing it to not download at all. Thanks, Steam, I appreciate your assistance.

Well, it's about time I did something for the proletariat because this is driving me nuts. I'm not going to spend two or three months just downloading this "update" just to play the game.

Solution 1: Get a better internet.

Perhaps the most ideal solution, besides TaleWorlds just sending me a copy of the game (which will never happen). The only pitfall with this is that I am about two or three months out from being able to foot the installation costs for the new internet, so this solution is about as effective as just downloading the 311.6 MB right now.

Solution 2: Treating the symptom.

My other solution is much more complex and convoluted, perhaps more than it needs to be. I take my copy of Warband to a friend's house, I install it on his computer and deal with all Steam BS on his machine, since his internet is much better than mine. Once that is all finished, and I can actually play Warband, I go into the Steam directory, copy/paste the Warband folder onto a flash drive, then cut/paste that into the Warband directory on my machine.

Since this isn't a thread asking for a solution, I will ask something else. How feasible is solution 2? Does Steam install some registry thing outside of the Warband directory, causing the game to not run if that registry is missing or corrupt?

1 -- I know the memory requirement for WB is 900 MB. Steam only installed less than 700 MB onto my machine, leaving 200 MB unaccounted for. My guess is the 200 MB is tied-up with this "update", as well as the actual update to the game that is about 100 MB.

Solution 2 is good. Either copy the whole warband folder or just create a backup copy(Backup game files). Both will work, however the backup will work only for you. If you decide to copy the whole folder, you'll just have to validate game files after restoring them into their place.

It should be even easier than that. Copy down your serial from Steam, get your friend to download the latest full installer from here (or do it yourself if you have the patience), install the game and you should be able to use the Steam provided serial to activate.

Although saying that if Steam has installed the game already you shouldn't need to re-activate, the non-Steam version should work fine.

I'm having a same kind of problem that Riddle so I decided to describe my problem here instead of making a new topic.

I bought Mount&Blade Complete from Steam a week ago. It contained the Vanilla Mount&Blade and Mount&Blade: Warband. We have three computers on our household and since my brother has been playing this game quite some time I decided it would be easier to copy the game(s) from his computer to my external hard-drive where i have my Steam-folder and the verify them. Everything went smoothly with Mount&Blade and I was able to play the game the same evening I bought it but Warband had problems. After I verified the game files Steam it started downloading some fragmentationed (I hope this is the right term) files but then stopped downloading the game at 99%. When I then tried to launch the game it said "The game is currently unavailable. Please try again at another time" or something like that. I was pissed and decided to play Mount&Blade and suspend the problem at another time.
Couple of days later I tried again and still the game said the same thing. I then Decided to delete local files and download the game files via Steam servers with no result as the download again stopped at 99%. the weirdest part is that my brother has been playing this game almost daily with no problems and also my other younger brother, who decided to buy the game at the same time than me since it was 50%-off, has been able to play the game without problems!

Tell steam to not keep games up to date?
unstall warband.
Set steam to ask, or not upgrade/wpdate games auto.

Install warband.

Play the game?

OR
