Well we have a Russian thread, Norwegians etc. Now we have a German thread.

In somewhat recent history, you have Prussia, possibly the most militaristic state ever that was not a junta. Then Nazis, then this:

Regardless of the flip flopping morals of the nation, it seems they love their lawmaking     :|

Germany poised to ban all violent video games

Like gamers around the world, Germans love their shoot-'em-ups. Sure, video gaming isn't quite the industry in Germany that it is in the U.S. (or some other parts of Europe), but it's still an enormous market for the industry.

Those days are quite likely to come to a screeching halt in a matter of weeks, as Germany is well on its way to banning all "violent video games," defined (via translation) as games "where the main part is to realistically play the killing of people or other cruel or inhuman acts of violence against humans or manlike characters."

Hmmmm... sounds like just about every game I play.

The move isn't just one politician banging a shoe on the podium in outrage. All 16 German states have already agreed on the move and are set on implementing it -- and soon. The only real hurdle remaining is pushing the law through German parliament, and that could happen before the end of the summer.

The law would have even broader consequences for game companies based in Germany (including Crysis creator Crytek), as the law would outlaw not just the sale of violent video games but the development of them in Germany, too. These companies would either be forced out of business or compelled to outsource development to other countries, unable to publish their own titles on their home turf.

Why all the panic over video games? The usual stuff, really: Their potential link to violence, particularly among youths. Earlier this year a German teenager killed more than a dozen people while dressed in black camouflage, purportedly copying moves learned in the terrorism-focused Counter-Strike. Such links are extremely controversial, but Germany has been at the forefront of lambasting violent games for years as causing these incidents.

So if the law becomes a reality, what then? Could this be a first step in a broad move to censor violence in all forms: TV shows, movies, books? No reporting of violence in German newspapers and on television news? National Internet filters to keep violent content (and web games) out of the minds of German citizens?

Lots for Germans to think about while they're playing Wii Bowling and Cake Mania.

It seems Nintendo owns Germany now.

Eh, more to do with politicians being politicians rather than Germans being Germans. They are trying to shift voter's attention to something which really is a non-issue (i.e. violent video games) to cast some of their more questionable actions in shadow.

Which reminds me of the Venture Bros.

"We have been protecting America since The Second Civil War: the invisible one."

That's old news in a way.
It pops up everytime there's an asswipe going postal, an election, or worst case, both. And it's the latter this year.
I'm looking forward to a whole summer full of bull**** like this.

Remember the "ban paintball"-thing not so long ago?

Heh, if the government feels so strongly about it they shouldn't bother with a military. :)
What? Sorry I don't get what you mean  :?

Or is it violence = bad therefore ban the military? Won't happen. Would be consistent*.

*and that's populist bull**** in it's finest, I know

Stop it. Thinking about this **** makes me twitch  :x

There were the first UFC fights ever in Germany last week. The headlines of the newspapers and the news on televisions were hypocrisy incarnate. Right after they complained about the "bloody spectacle", there was something about a boxing event where someone got his nose broken. But hey.. that's fine...

Well the irony is that they're banning paintball and gaming when they haven't even banned gun possession or hunting. How's that for priorities?

Well, from outside it's pretty understandable. Games are quite revolting in many ways.

Still, I don't know that there has been any link demonstrated yet. I'd like to see the evidence on which they're basing the policy. Anecdotal I guess.

you should read all the ranting against those censorship and game banning laws. I think many ppl here in germany are against that, but in the end, they won't stop it. hey, this is still germany, we mourn and rant and afterwards it's normal. typical

The paintball-ban is gone. For now at least.
Public scorn and ridicule was too much even for Bosbach*.

*he's the German version of a redneck. Just that he's wearing a suit and is a politician. Kind of like this lawyer in the U.S. that tried to ban GTA. Forgot his name. Thompson or something?

the most pathetic thing is: banning games and the same time selling tons of armaments.
Kennst du Hagen Rether? Er hat mal gesagt: "Deutschland und Frankreich sind die empörtesten Waffenhändler der Welt"

Translation, if anyone is bothered:
Hagen Rether, a German cabaret artist, once said, that "Germany and France are the most disgusted arms dealer in existence".

A country where they make some of the worlds finest firearms wondering why they have high guncrime? who'd have thunk it!

@Wellenbrecher: That's a fact. Got to write in english here, gna, scheiße. Beside this "killergame" banning, much worse is the internet censorship. Heard Merkel criticizing China for the censorship, but what CDU party is pushing forward here isn't very different. Once they have the tools to censor, then it will expand, you won't be able to see what is banned, why and who decides. Plus they are monitoring all your communications.

This system is fascist, Hitler, Stalin, Honecker whoever would have loved to have such controlling power and information over the people. Crazy thing is, the people today think this is freedom because we have "democracy", but they seem to fail in seeing, that their state today has more information about the individual citizens than ever before

und ich halt mich lieber zurück, als über die zensurursel mit ihrer internetzsenur zu wettern. mal schauen bis zur wahl, piratenpartei ole!? oder der ritt in die ganz große scheiße, noch tiefer als jetzt.

I can't see it being particularly effective. Play.com deliver to Germany, and since it's inter-EU trade there's sod all the government could do to prevent it.

Or you could just nip to Austria or similar.
