And now - hurray!!! - after you spend the time to recruit, generate a new character, perhaps pay money for development (per a good suggestion above), dig up some great armor and weapons - the game will go **Poof** and your new Companion will be dead meat!

Since you can't keep them out of combat if they're in your warband, over time you're gonna lose every single one of them. Hurray for TW progress in fixing the game!! Time to leave EA!!!

It would be good if your soldiers could become companions.

In Rome Total War, can't remember if it's 1 or 2, but there were random events after battles that gav you a chance to recruit a soldier that really excelled to be a new general.

TW could do the same for BL

Yeah I loved that in the old Total Wars as well, where a battle could randomly generate an event in which the captain of an army with no general could become a general or even be adopted into the family if the army won a battle against tough enough odds.

Random companion events would really add to the immersion in this game. This soldier idea would be good for one, as the soldier type could determine the companion's initial stat line/level.

Maybe a small chance could be added for random low level companions to be recruitable from events like saving villagers from battles/raids. This could be a good way to add level 1 characters to the game (maybe with some base level attributes/skills from culture and a couple of random ones thrown in).

Randomly generated companion recruits that are turned down wouldn't have to remain in the game world to avoid character bloat and allow the player to have some control over the types of characters generated to avoid redundancy.

I always thought random street encounters would be a cool idea for this game too, which would incentivize walking around cities/villages. Maybe you could randomly encounter street thugs at night or rebels in low loyalty towns which could lead to fights/quests with some having a chance at recruiting a new companion after saving them etc.

Events like that might be a more natural way to add characters to vanilla game (although a secondary character generator would be a great mod to have).

Just considering now that maybe a second tier of companion could be added as well if character bloat is a projected issue. Second tier ones, like for example the vast majority of aforementioned villager random recruits, might have a higher chance at dying in combat and maybe could have a character level cap for this tier at 18-20 (this would be paired with a reduced death rate for epic characters). That way you could still have named characters die frequently in combat (such is war) but the ones that you have spent a lot of time upgrading and equipping would have a lower chance of dying. Perhaps there could also be a small chance of the companion being an epic tier character upon recruitment or have an ability to upgrade them to that higher tier if they survive X number of battles etc.

Things like these might take some time to implement though, in the mean time as a workaround would love to just see a console command that allows you to selectively spawn a lvl 1 character type (the surgeon, the spice vendor etc..) into the world. I suggested this in another thread as I think this would vastly improve quality of life for the game rather than being completely at the mercy of the RNG and have too many of one type populating your world.
