General MOD question: do they preserve the vanilla version?

My appreciation to all the people out there that are involved in making (apparently) great mods.

I see many MODs that I would like to try.

Only, when I tryed installing one of them ("100year war" by Gandalf, promising stuff!) I experienced that the vanilla version had changed a lot as well (e.g. textures, splash screen...) in a way that I find just disturbing - luckly the unistaller did a good job removing the MOD.

I wish that MODs were really modular and kept the unmodified version 100% clean. Is this going to happen?

Some mods state what it is gonna change in the unMOD version upon installation, some does not say, and since only a few mention an uninstaller I feel a little uneasy installing those (so I don't).

Also, to which success do MODs avoid colliding with each other?

If everything else fails, can I reinstall the game in another directory and MODify that copy instead? (including this: can I re-register the new copy with the same code?)

Any light? Thank you in advance!

(sorry if this has been asked before. I guess it has, only I did not find it in the FAQ or searching the forum)

HYW 2.1 was for M&B 0.704, when there was no way to have different textures for each module. Moreover, the installer made a backup of the vanilla textures.
HYW 3.0 is for 0.711 and doesn't alter the official module, so you can play it without having stuff from it in the official module.

And yes, you can have several installs of M&B.

another thing i'd like to point out is that you can always download the update patch and it'll restore all of your defaults

Thank you Gandalf for the info!
exactly what I wanted to know

(what about the Ancientwanker's lotr mod "the last days", and the "story mod"?)
