Why have equipment be so expensive?

I was thinking a cool way they could take it would be to make all gear much more affordable but when you upgraded your troops you would have to pay for their new gear. You would need to stop at a main town to upgrade them since they need to go shopping. I always thought it was funny paying 25-100gold and my troop comes back with 1000-50000 gold worth of new gear.

Doing that would make it impossible to get high tier troops early game. Besides during much of the medieval period soldiers were responsible for purchasing and maintaining their own equipment.

That could be a good thing. Maybe something like making it up to tier 3 would be doable early on but above that would be harder. It would make you care more about your troops and it would hurt more when you lose them.

I have thought exactly the same, in fact there is a mod that allows you to edit the price of upgrades, and I have put 10 times more than in the original. Still, I'm going to edit the troops so tier 5-6 wears good armor, but not the 500,000 denar lamellar armor. I think those should only be for the nobles.

Damn that sounds nice, yeah that makes sense to me too, thats rich people armor

I've been trying, but without a troop editor like the warband it's crazy, because I don't know the exact name of the items. At first it seemed that they had the same name as in the game, p. ex: northern_lamellar_armor, but then I noticed that there are armors that do not have the same name. So I'm not going to be able to do it ... I'm looking forward to a troop editor being released to fix all the absurdities in the game.

Looking forward to it too

Another thing I was thinking of is if you kill 10 enemy's or capture them, you would receive 10 gear setups too. So this would balance out the cost a bit. You could sell used gear and then upgrade your troops with the profits

That would be nice as well. I also think that being able to edit each soldiers gear with captured armor would be nice. Maybe something like how you equip companions. or let’s say I want to upgrade the swords my Imperial Infantry have (My last campaign I ended up with 100+ high tier swords from battles) you could select the Imperial infantry and it puts you into a trade menu where you put the upgrades on the left side and it auto-populates the equipment to replace any lower quality swords.

I had thought (and I think this is an idea for a medium-advanced level mod, but not difficult) that you can get an item called "gear" from the loot when you kill high tier soldiers. This gear (p. ex: "gear heavy armor", "gear tier 5"...) should be necessary to upgrade your soldiers to high tier. If you don't get gear in battle, you could also buy them in cities. P. ex: "gear infantry tier 5", 1000 denars.

And for the upgrade it would work the same as the requirement of "horses" for the cavalry soldiers.

Because right now, killing looters you end up having a seargent crosbowman, but I do not know where that man has obtained neither the lamellar armor, nor the crossbow. Attacking looters surely not, and with the denars that I have paid him, neither.

Another (simpler) option is to make the game's looting work at last (because it sucks right now), and give you a fair amount of armor. So, to upgrade a heavy armor soldier, it could ask you for the item, just like it asks you for the horses when you upgrade cavalry. p. ex: upgrade seargent crosbowman -> you need 1000 denars and a piece of "heavy armor", or "armor tier 6", whatever you want.

This would be a much easier mod to do.

Anyway, I also think that the best armor in the game shouldn't be in the soldiers, no matter how good they are. They are soldiers. Either they put the lamellar armor at a reasonable price and in all markets, or they remove them from the soldiers. But a soldier cannot wear armor that the character cannot find on the market. Maybe a noble yes, but not a soldier.
