Gary Jenning's Aztec

I've recently rediscovered a book of mine, Aztec, written by Gary Jennings.

It's about a young Aztec man, and his journey through life, love, and war, in the last days of the Aztec empire.

It is truly awesome, and anyone capable of reading it, should do so.

So, anyone read it?

Along with Duncton Wood, it is one of two books to ever make me really sad for one.

It's really well written, very, very long, so you really get to know the characters, and the characters are likeable, and realistic, I think.

It is however, pretty gory and violent at some points, and erotic at others, so, maybe not premium reading for youngsters.

The whole point of the book isn't the bloody and erotic parts, though.

The best thing about it is the fact that you follow the main character Mixtli through his entire life, and learn of his endeavors in both love and war.

I just got the horrible picture of Mel Gibson in 'Apocalypto'.  :???:
I hope it's far from that.

Do you get a vivid description of the Aztec culture?
What I mean is, has he done his reseach thoroughly?

Or do you mostly read it because it has a lot of war and love in it?

No, it describes Aztec culture very good, I think. The whole plot is the main character telling the bishop of Mexico about his own life, and Aztec culture. It's brilliant.

It describes their thoughts, their arts, their religion, their rituals, everything.

It even gives us the Nahuatl words for genitalia.

Sounds interesting. I'll have to look into this in a dark corner at the library...

Yeh, you should.
Which part of Danmark are you from?
Off topic here

I live in Odense (= Odin's sanctuary) but born in Albertslund (suburb to Copenhagen).

So how much does the book cost? And is it paperback or hardcover?

I have no idea at all.

It's been brooding at the top of my mother's bookcase (Is it called that? I'm failing!) since I was little, and I've never been allowed to read it until two years ago or something. She hates it, and thinks it's gross and unpleasant, so she gave the book to me when she thought I was old enough.

Never heard of it before or after.

I once bought a novel by Gary Jennings without knowing who he was, it was about the journeys of Marco Polo and it started out strong but after the first eighty pages or so I almost puked on that book, he is a perverted freak. Maybe he toned down the deviant sexual craziness for his later novels but I won't touch it. The title of the book was The Journeyer.

Meh, it's not so bad in Aztec.

But I found out that some of the things in it prolly ain't so realistic after all.

"Teh aztecs got faucets and REAL toilets!" sez Gary.

"**** you too, buddy!" sez I.

Reminds me of a night about a year or two ago, I was extremely bored, and alone in the house. I was just staring at the bookshelf trying to see something besides Agatha Christie, and I picked up a book called 'Clan of the Cave Bear' and eventually and reluctantly started to read. Eventually ended up reading the whole series, and was a great story. If all else fails, raid your mothers book collection.
