Garrison Tips

Hello. I've just started to take over territory, and would like to know what troops make for good garrisons.

That is, how many archers/infantry should I put in? Is there a faction that makes the best siege defenders?

Nord Huskarls and Vaegir Archers are my personal favorites for attack/defense siege.  For garrison, I like to put my top tier troops in, and low tier troops travel with me to get upgraded, although if you are just leaving some for defense, large numbers of middle tier troops, say tier 3, is probably the most cost effective.

One hundred is a nice number - I tend to train and keep my recruits in the field as I do my lordly business. As I get top tier troops I deposit them as garrison troops. This keeps your active armies running cost down and keeps elite troops ingarrisons ready for seiges making assaults hard on the enemy even when your not on hand yourself

I remember that auto-siege on the old MB based on auto-solve. Hence it would not matter what kind of troops you put in you fief.

Two words - Rhodok Crossbowmen. They're extremely effective en masse and won't break your bank either.

You know, normally I'd agree with this and use them, but I hate the evil, vile, little conniving twits!  That aside, massed crossbows are just plain mean and retched sharpshooters are good infantry to boot.

Rhodok sharpshooters by far, they easily penetrate the shields of lower to medium tier units, makes use of the castle defences and are really accurate.

That actually sounds like a good idea, albeit annoying to gather. I suppose any party would just see, "Oh ****, huge army!" and run off, huh?

Back to effective soldiers, though, Rhodok crossbowmen seem to be the consensus for ranged defenders... Would you suggest a full 100 crossbowmen, or mix it up with some infantry?

Definately mix up with infarty, otherwise when the enemies finally reach the wall, then your garrison will be slaughtered. I usually use Nord Huscarls, Rhodok Crossbowmen and Swadian Knights/Sarranid Mamlukes for my garrison. Nord Huscarls and Rhodok Crossbowmen are good alone too.

By the way, if you ever get a chance to, then get Almerra Castle as your fief (by capturing it I guess), it's just so easy to defend in sieges as the enemy not only has to walk up a hill while being fired at, but also has to walk INSIDE the castle where the enemy is met by archer/crossbowmen fire from 4 different sides (walls) and met by melee fighters at a ladder which is deeper in the castle.

I planned to get Almerra. If you walk by it with Artimenner in your party, he actually comments on how freakin' hard to siege it is.

Using crossbowmen for defense is somewhat better than using archers. Why?

- They usually have better armor.
- They do more damage.
- They bend while reloading so almost 50% less likely get hit.
- They are slow therefore their bolts last longer than arrows.

A better idea maybe is to mix them with archers.

You also need infantry for defense who have large shields, plus a mix of some fast and some long weapons. The best mix would probably be some axemen and some pikemen. Nord Huscals + Rhodok Sergeants would be a good mix for instance.

it is wrong to put elit troops into castles, ul lose money that way. If u put 150 mid tier troops, ul have an sizable force, and still get +++ on ur account.. I think garnison wages should be TOP 450-500 per week, that way ul get +700-900 for castle +vila per week. I think it is quite a nice sum.

Doesn't it depend on what value you set for your battle size for instance?

I mean, imagine you have 40 soldiers as a first defense which depends on the battlesize + number of enemies + your tactics skill. And you have a total of 100 men (50 crossbowmen + 50 infantry) in garrison.

Will the game give you a mix of 20 crossbowmen + 20 infantry? Or will you get 40 crossbowmen?

um if the enemy faction gets together and assaults your castle/town you going to die with troops like that recruits tend to die very easy

That's bull. if they swarm like the new system does. they will have more then 1500 on there side. So theoretically they can even take that down. Practically they would wipe them out of the castle.

But how are you gonna fill the castle with so many ??? You do know that even with high relationship with village it takes a long time to gather so many recruits.

I just wished they made autocalc better that they take into account troop tier, strength, weapons proficiency etc.. That would have solved the garrison issue. theoretically high tier is good. But autocalc destroys that path.

If you have 1000 recruits in the city/castle and a 1500 man army attacks .... you just wait as autocalc slashes 1 off each side at a time and then step in when their army is down to 550 men and win.

AI are notoriously retarded I have relatively low tier troops in my castle like nord footmen but in large numbers and
noone attacks because they ( AI ) always somehow choose low garrisons always and training doesnt influence their decision
I tend not to vary faction troops because if war is declared and you lose a battle that system is screwed
