and surprisingly, they wrote 2 pages!

meh, tough but fair. He could have highlighted some of the more original aspects, but overall he gives a pretty fair view of the game to the mainstream player

So in the first paragraph he decries M&B as a plotless RPG, then in the second he points out that it "isn’t so much a structured RPG as an exploration of being stranded in a medieval world". What a douchebag.

*shrug*  He wrote a pretty fair review.  At this point, as with any reviews, I just ignore the number completely and actually read what was said.  He's right, there's absolutely nothing there to help out a new player.  Many of us forget that, having played this game for ages.

I did read what he said. He, like quite a few before him, wasn't even able to correctly identify what genre M&B is. RPG, it ain't.

Thats exactly the point! MnB has all the "framework" of ALSO being an RPG - yet, it lacks content and opportunities to make that happen.... especially, as the reviewer points out "early in the game" (read, when "not being a vassal"). The lack of "guidance" to newbies is directly related to that: as it is now, unless you're a vassal you have to "search" for opportunities, and there aren't many. If on the other hand, you would regularily run into opportunities... i.e. meeting an npc, being presented the situation, and then being asked what you wish to do, then said newbie would have the missing "orientation".

To be honest, i'm surprised that MnB was released in this state. During the beta's, it always seemed to me as if the devs were for now focussing on the engine and framework, and then later add the content. This however didn't happen: The framework was finished and a bit of content was added, and then the whole thing was released - as if asking mods to fill in the lack of content.

I agree with some of his points, like weak quests...

But he focussed too much on the lack of a story imo. I agree some (optional) guidance at the start could be welcome for newcomers, but I don't see not having a story as a negative.

Also, I've never experienced any of the bugs he mentioned.

But hey, at least he obviously had a fair crack at the game. Unlike some reviewers...

I'd say a pretty daft and one sided review.
But then, I guess, it might be fair for those into traditional RPGs with elfs and dwarves and other such buggers, with ****loads of idiotic quests, some moronic center storyline and so forth.
The reviewer fails to grasp the originality and scale of M&B and he also fails to delve into many features, such as becoming a marshal or engaging in an uprising.
However, one thing he is right about, probably by chance rather than actually being right, is that M&B feels unfinished when you look beyond the spectacular battles.

True, I can agree with that. Hopefully Armagan will learn from this and won't rush his next project so.

My biggest grippw with M&B is not lack of story, but lack of inmersion, not in the battles obviously, I do really feel like my guy is commander and a soldier there, but in the world.  The reviewr does have a point there. Calradia doesn't feel alive, noone has any interesting dialog, theres almost no detail in the setting, not a single story for swadia, the vaegirs, the nords, etc, except for the little comments your companion make sometimes.

The funny thing is that they listed 'Weak Story' as one of the cons, and the description says 'for a game to collect this mark, the story must be a main component of the game'.

I don't see how the story is an integral component of M&B.

The review was fair, though 6.0 it's a bit of low for a site that gave 9.5 to Crysis.

Well, that's one flaw right there and then with mainstream gamers and reviewers. If they were to review chess they'd give it a 1.5 cause it lacks a story that you can follow. Parts of the review were fair, but other parts were not - then again, he's a mainstream reviewer. Which is why indie games will never be equal to mainstream games.

Maybe these game reviewers should at least pretend to do some due-diligence journalism and research on their own what the game is claimed to be by the developers. The acronym "RPG" does not exist on http://www.taleworlds.com's main page which describes the game.

"Mount & Blade really feels more underdeveloped than it does flat-out bad. There are some really promising innovations and design ideas here...As it is, though, this RPG provides a lot of sizzle and little steak. It is still worth keeping an eye on, as the developers and an ever-growing mod community are continually enhancing the game. Just don't expect too much right now if you're coming to this indie from more professional games with higher production values. "

In this case I think hes done his job just fine. I dont see how you can disagee with the above summary.

He created a char that looked like Eddie Izzard then complained the game wasnt attractive  :???:

I totally agree regarding when you first appear in-game tho.

It's a very good review, valid points raised and supported with facts. This should really help Taleworlds improve their next offering.

If he stated that "imaging what they could do with an Oblivion sized budget", then why does he be a good journalist and describe just what the budget was - a guy who quit his regular job to create his game with only the shirt on his back. For prospective players, knowing WHY the game is a light game is important, and they should know just how much was done in M&B with so little resources. Maybe reviewers should start basing scores for indie games in relation to ... oh, I don't know ... OTHER indie games instead of vs. games with $25 million budgets?

Compared to another indie games M&B would deserve a 10, that's for sure. But we are talking about a review in a very mainstream site.
