game wont update/start (steam)

anyone else have this problem? it says "Update Paused" so i try to unpause and start and it just goes back to update paused, i restarted steam and still wont update, and i cant get into the game either, i was in game and it crashed to desktop than this started to happen, the version i was on was 1.112 before it crashed, i know this is a steam error too but more people post here.\

also im assuming im going to have to reinstall, where would i find my save games?

Steam is getting hammered because of the Left 4 Dead 2 DLC and discount, try it again in a bit and hopefully the servers will be in better shape.
