Game Suggestions - Standards, Musicians, Leaders and Champions

Hi all

I've been playing a few weeks now on the beta - I think Taleworld are really onto something here and it's great fun. One of my most popular game modes is 'battle' and after a few games last night I had some thoughts on how to add a little flavour. I half expect that some of these suggestions may have been mooted before.

At the moment each side in the battle mode is a mass of fairly indistuinguishable, similar looking bodies. Lots of people try to organise tactics but the game isn't helping players with this at the moment - if everyone is wearing identkit clothing. A few years back I was involved in dark Age battle reenactment in the UK and there were a few things that really helped on the field (especially when things got big and messy) so here are a few thoughts to aid battlefiled communication.

1: Standard Bearer. One troop on each side can be the standard bearer. This standard would be a clearly seen flag on top of a pole, bearing a suitbaly good looking design that matched the side. A standard bearer can be used whenever a disorganised side wants to pull itself together. It is an obvious rally point and a point to follow into battle.

The flag bearer could have a few animations. E.g. wave it furiously from side to side, or, lower it and point it in one direction.

2: Musician. Similar to the above, one person can carry the army instrument. This could be a horn, drums, bagpipes, whatever is appropriate. The instrument holder could sound one of several pre-set tunes (beats) - charge, retreat, general morale boosting battlecry. Each tune could have an ccompanying text message. Good instruments would sound great.

3: Champion. The player with the highest score on each side can opt to have a champions mark. A small flag or motif or shiny outfit. This is just a fun thing but I can tell you, when I recognise certain enemy players on the battlefield, chopping their way towards me, I get pretty frantic.

This might also allow two champions to meet on the battlefield before the battle, having a duel in front of both armies.

4: Leader. This is simply a figure head who has added communication options, maybe predefined text messages. Maybe a shiny helmet too. This could be combined with one of the above. A player could apply to be a Leader and the side vote on it.

I understand that for organised clans much of this can be bypassed with TeamSpeak (etc). Also, some people are great at typing messages. But, at the moment communication needs to be improved, so why not do it in a really flavourful kind of way that adds to the atmosphere of the game?

Cheers

PS I play as TheDuke on the EU servers mostly.

I like these ideas.
I really do.

Banner carriers, leaders and musicians could add alot to the game.
Champions sound like a good way of telling new people 'Stay the heck away from that guy'

That's the truth. Last night some player called TFW_Tario (I think) was slaughtering everyone. He was a great player and I got to the point where I'd run away if I saw him

Hehehehe, TFW_Tario and TFW_Pif_Paf (pwi7aaf)

And besides, the idea is hopeless

Edit: Cholera, ta menda Tario miał jednego killa więcej....czekaj, czekaj łobuzie

How about the highest k minus d player for each side can get a cool looking helmet.  It would actually have the defense of whatever helmet you bought but it would look awesome.  Being champion could be fun.  Should be an option though as I'm sure not every player wants to be a mark.

I like all except the musician and leader. The leader could be condensed into both the flag bearer and leader, and the musician is just pointless really, doesn't add anything to gameplay.

The musician has one advantage that the others don't. You don't have to be reading text or looking in the right direction to know what to do. You can *hear it* despite frantically blocking and hacking on the front line.  It is how armies of old communicated and I think it could be effective.

It would also sound extremely atmospheric - and at the moment the game does need a little more atmosphere I think.

Yes it may have been how colonial armies fought, but afaik there was no such thing as a musician in medieval armies.

And there would be no need for such a person if/when voice and quick commands are implemented.

Of course they had musicians on medieval battlefields, drums, horns etc.
I like the idea but I don't know if it's a worthwhile addition.

Drums and horns sure, but nothing like a battle line dedicated musician to coodinate troop movements that you would see in colonial battles.

Still, being able to communicate via horn blasts would be immensely cool. The only problem is that most 32 man warbands shouldn't need this much coordinating.
