Sergeant Knight at Arms
Well hi guys, been a while, I've just done my first contract at sea in the merchant navy, and if there is one thing I definately want for next contract is some games.

I'm looking for people to suggest singleplayer games only, as multiplayer isn't an option when you're in the middle of the indian ocean.
They must be available to download, I'm not messing about with disks, and I'm almost certain most laptops don't even use disks anymore.
I will be buying a new laptop, any suggestions for something around the 1000 pound mark will be welcome, but I don't plan on getting it soon.

Games I already have on steam

(Hopefully that link works for you guys)

I don't mind old games or new, I just need singleplayer games that are loooooong RPGs or RTS games.
Some of you might say, wait for the steam christmas sale, I already am planning on it.

Cheers, and hi again

EDIT: As an afterthought, because I can't see one any where, is there a release date for Bannerlord yet?

No release date for Bannerlord. Do you not have Warband? I'd highly recommend Paradox'games. EUIV, Crusader Kings 2, Hearts of Iron. They all are very replayable and very long. Lots of great mods for CK2 as well. Plus they can be launched without Steam in case offline mode breaks.

X-Com and it's expansion are a good thing to pick up, vanilla is pretty fun and there is The Long War mod.

Maybe don't get GTA V because it does periodically check in online to make sure you haven't turned your legit copy into a pirated copy and will lock you out of it until it can go online.

For RPGs, there are the Bioware classics like Baldur's Gate, KotOR, and Dragon Age: Origins. Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity is very good too. The Witcher series is very good too, especially the third one. Dunno how well it would run on a ~1000 GBP laptop but it should still run.

Tropico is more of a city builder than an RTS, but it's a timesink, so it might be worth getting. It's on sale right now, actually.

I agree with Sir Prince on Pdox games.

Yes, Tropico 4+expansions is a good buy. I don't know what state Tropico 5 is in, it wasn't quite ready on release iirc.

If you can stand the anime style, I can recommend Valkyria Chronicles on Steam (it gets good sales so definitely wait for one). It's some kind of tactical RPG similar to X-COM (if a bit simpler), which turns into a 3rd-person shooter when you controll your soldiers on the battlefield. It's alternate-history WW2 in Not-Quite-Europe.
It has become one of my favorite games, mostly due to the battle mechanics and the loads of characters.

Dark Souls 2 if you're willing to get a PS4/Xbone controller.
Almost any strategy game would work decent for singleplayer: Civilization 4 or 5, any Total War depending on your time period preference, Rise of Nations for early 2000s Microsoft RTS type of game.
Fallout: New Vegas or Skyrim if you like Bethesda style RPGs.
Grim Dawn for Diablo-style ARPGs
Deus Ex: Human Revolution for stealth/action.
Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion or Star Ruler 2 for space 4x RTS.
Terraria for 2D casual type of gameplay.

Dark Souls could be a bit finicky because of the inability to pause in the middle of something.

Faster Than Light and Dwarf Fortress are good timewasters too.

I'm somewhat jelly of your profession.  You could get a pirate game but your captain might jail you for it.  :ohdear:

Yes, no pause, but generally each engagement isn't much longer than 30 seconds and you can simply stop moving forwards. It's not like he's going to get randomly invaded out there.

Civ 5 (with the Brave New World expansion) is magnificent. If you like strategy, GET IT.

Just get Bastion, play it 5 times. Then enjoy the music.

Also Morrowind, easy to spend lots of time on, and it's still cool.

Yes Bastion is a good suggestion, Dwarf Fortress is also very time consuming and addictive.

Get Darkest Dungeon - it's still in development but well worth playing for hours and hours and hours at its current state. It's a turn-based rogue-like dungeon crawler with really kickass art design and ambiance.

Get Darkest Hour and download Kaiserreich mod.
