ok what we have is a sort of...

exploration mode.

i would like to see in later versions.
a quest/ story mode?

with proper cutscenes, good storyline like your family gets killed and village destroyed, so you set out to find the killers and avenge your family, but theres a major conspiracy which happened 2000 years before and you have to travel through deserts to locations where you must recover the history from a temple, but you get an uber weapon and get attacked by wierd creatures in the temple and you have to escape and collapse it, but then you have to travel to the 4 elemental towers which could be released as episodes, and maybe an episode comes every month, season.
and everyone who has a serial key can get access to the special area where they can download episodes, but the first section i mentioned above could be released for non- payers, which would make them want to pay to unlock the other episodes, and then theres massive battles at the element towers and to release the free spirit thing from the centre ring, and get a new uber suit of armour they need to enter a gladiator arena and defeat the best warriors, and then the story could continue from a different persons point of view like the friend who gets split up and sent to the forest region, who has to escape and slay the chief or something.

basically, im sure most people have probably though of "something" like this.
but i like the idea, and if something like episodes were added, the game would be one hell of a leap towards game of the year

thanks, SCopE.

i would be willing to contribute more of the story if you needed.

ADDED

there could also be a timeline advance feature and new weapons like guns could be researched as times goes on, and it could span over several generations in the family line.

The quest idea could possibly be done with the modding tools when they're available. Guns could be added as a mod I'm pretty positive... dunno about the timeline/ research thing. Good ideas tho.

thanks for finally responding, but if they made this in the retail game then it would be more like a professional game.

For some reason every time people start talking about adding a story, quite a few people on the forums don't want it. Now personally, i don't want to HAVE to do the story, especially when i've beaten it already and just want to make a new character(i remember my 20 hours wasted repeating the story on Freelancer because i lost my save and just wanted to freelance). So, like Morrowind, as long as i can choose not to do it, or take a detour at any time i like, its great! All RPG's need a great story...its just expected.

Well i'm all in favour of having a world dynamic enough to allow a story to actually be generated on its own.

I'm sure that scattered throughout the final version of the story, there will be little mini-plots which are pre-stripted and involve heroes and such. For example, the whole introduction to Borcha thing was a pre-scripted part of the game.

it doesnt have to be pre scripted, there could be a good/ evil mode like in KOTOR 2

It would be great if say you saved a person who was kidnapped. Say this same person would then become part of the game world. maybe, down the road you receive a message from said person about a quest or favor to perform. What I mean is, if you save someone, they can have an inpact on the game world. If you don't, then no quest strinmgs would become of it or other bad things could happen. The persons' parent or lover would send assasins after you until you confront the assasins' buyer. Just my thoghts on it.

You should have got the Open SP mod. Freedom from the start.

Flitting in and out of the story when you want to is the best approach in my opinion. But any scripted battles would have to be beefed up if you take them at higher levels.

I think a great example of a game that has a plot but is still totally freeform is Sid Meiers' Pirates.

http://www.2kgames.com/pirates/pirates/home.php

For those of you who don't know, Pirates is set in the Carribean, and has game play so similar to M&B, you might as well call it Ship and Cannon. Essentially, sail around the Carribean, working for one (or more) of the four countries that have colonies there, or for yourself. Most of the game play takes place on a map of the Carribean and the Gulf of Mexico, but whenever you engage an enemy, the game switches to a tactical battle map. (sound familiar?)

The reason I bring this game up is that it does an excellent job of giving the player a plot to follow, while keeping the game play unconstricted. The plot is a standard 'rescue your family' plot that has you tromping across the Carribean fighting the villian who kidnapped them, and then rescuing them. If you don't want to be bothered to rescue them, as that would take up valuable pillaging time, you don't have to. Instead, you can become the most feared british privateer on the Spanish Main, or a wealthy merchant.

A plot in M&B should be along similar lines. The game should present to you a series of quests of greater and greater dificulty, that culminates with you defeating some powerful archvillian. If the player doesn't want have to rescue his family, then he doesn't have to take those quests. Instead, he can go off to be the most feared Swadian warlord of all time, or become the terror of the northern bandits, or whatever he wants. The plot doesn't even have to be the old 'rescue the family' plot; it can be anything that you can structure around such a series of quests.

I don't know about everyone else, but I would like some more in depth quests beyond 'get me this' or 'capture these people.'
