Game freezes when conquering last remaining castle

Hi, I've been playing M&B for a while now, and I've established myself as quite a power in the world of Calradia

So here's the deal, I'm currently playing as a Rebel Faction (no king or claimant) and I've conquered all the towns, villages and castles except for one castle.

There are two factions still playing the Vaergirs with one castle and the Khergit with no fiefs. I lay siege to the remaining castle and win the battle, it passes the prisoner management screen, but when it returns to the world map, the game freezes. The image is still, nothing happens, the numlock key on the keyboard is active, but i cant minimize or close the game (doesn't respond to ctrl+alt+del or ctrl+esc).

I've tried waiting it out but nothing happens.

What should I do?? Please help me, I need to put closure to this (way too) addictive game

I'm running M&B 1.011, no mods. AMD Athlon X2 4200+, 2 Gb DDR2 800 Mhz, onboard sound and vcard (Ati X1200), Windows XP SP3 Professional.

Did you try many times? Because I don't see why it would do this, are you sure it's the game, and not your computer that's doing something?

Hi, I tried three times (it's quite a long battle). It could be my computer, but why? It's above the minimum requirements for the game, and it never crashed before... It could be that the computer was processing the aftermath, but I've waited an hour and it remains the same...

I "ended" the game before by conquering everything for the Vaergirs, could the problem be related to the fact I'm not fighting for a Faction?

Any ideas?

OK new development, I conquered the castle (one more time) the game froze, I waited to see what would happen (about an hour or so), and the following error message appeared:

What does this mean?

How many enemy lords are in the castle? Sometimes it will screw up if there's a lot of lords in there because they have nowhere to respawn. Try waiting for a couple to emerge and defeat them on the open field before storming the castle.

Isn't this a well known bug? You can't ever win the solo rebel game, taking the very last castle always locks the game up.

IS IT???  I couldn't find anything about it in the forum. Are you sure? Because if that's the case the game is over for me then...

I was sieging the last castle one more time, waited so there would be less lords inside, in the meanwhile the Vaegirs took another castle from me. I conquered the first castle (without errors) went to the last one and again waited so there would be less lords inside it, but still with only 6 or 7 lords inside the game freezes.

So I suppose the game can't be won like this? It's a shame, and it's weird that the game freezes when you try it, if you aren't supposed to win like this something else should happen a town or castle rebelling or something like that...

Thank you for your replies so far.

The problem AFAIK is with the captured / escaped lords having nowhere to respawn. Usually if you can take them out before taking the castle it's fine.

So I should be able to finish the game as a Rebel, right? No known bug? As anyone finished the game like this?

Best regards.

NO its not, I for one control every thing right now and the game is fine.

Ok so I let the Vaegirs take another castle, then I tried to conquer the first one that had 20+ lords inside, and the game crashed.
So I guess the true problem is not the "conquer everything as a rebel" but the large number of enemy lords inside the castle.

Thank you all for your replies.

Ok, so a different issue, I too have conquered everything except for the last castle and post taking it the game crashes. My issue now is, I'm playing hardcore, so I can't go back and reload from a previous place. Is there any way to export my character when all I have is a save file that crashes everything when it's opened?

I just had the same issue.

Took over the whole bloody country, fought in many bloody 2000+ man battles, spent hundreds of hours on the game between this time and my first run-through. And then I get this.

So after I served a king the first time I figured I'd take the challenging route and take everything for myself. And no, it won't let me.

Assuming there could ever be a time that all those bloody turtling lords leave the Slezkh Castle, which is going to be an aeon or two because over half them are 0/1 parties, and assuming that would fix the problem anyway, this is an extreme disappointment and a gross oversight.

I should have seen this coming, because every time I've gotten into a big battle on version 1.011 I got a few dozen or so script error messages. And when it gets to the "so and so escaped" segment it acted like over half the lords were never there.

So is it really true that I'm gonna have to sit around while three or four dozen small parties pathetically raid my villages and seige my castles just so they get out of their little hole in the snow long enough so I can legally cap the last point on the map or what? One of my castles is already under siege and there're still two dozen or so lords sitting in there anyway. Is even possible that they'll ever leave?

Oh, and before I declared war on the Vaegirs by beating the crap out of Yaroglek and throwing his carcass in one of my fifty or so dungeons, I tried retiring from the game just to see what ending I might get. And it said my liege makes me lord of Narra. Yeah, thanks. After taking over 85% of the world I look in the mirror and tell myself, "Yeah dude, you get to be Lord of Narra. One town. Yep. Hope you like it there!" My "liege?" Are you kidding? When I've been a solo rebel the whole time. With that in mind I seriously doubt I'd get anything better even if I did take that last bloody castle.

Did the devs really think no one was gonna try playing the game this way or what?

Update:

I took 500 or so men with me to the last castle, beseiged it and waited for 2 days for the place to evacuate before I scaled the walls. Well, now I'm left with the disagreeable task of hunting down so many little armies, but at least it worked.

Thanks to Archonsod for mentioning the too many lords deal. I really hope that when Warband is released this little problem is polished off, especially since rebelling so gonna be a lot more accessible this time around.

Time to go hunting...

Another update:

Hunted down every one of the armies.
Kingdom of Nords Rebels is the sole remaining kingdom, yeah.

And when I retire, what do I get?

Narra.

Well, it was fun getting there. Just wish someone higher up woulda accommodated the nuts like me who actually played through the whole game as a rebel.

Anyway, I'm just looking forward to Warband. I'm hoping the little issues like this are gonna be addressed. Til then I gotta retire M&B and get back to the real world for awhile. Good night

I started another character in the mean time so the autosave will be that one now. Tricksy. I may just have to accept that that character is gone. Bah. Thanks anyway guys.
