Game crashes when playing with no internet connection

So today, I finished some work early and decided to play some singleplayer Warband on my laptop at my school.
I load up my game save and start sieging Derchios Castle.  The first headshot  that hits an enemy crashes the game back to the desktop.
I tried this again and again.  It always crashes.  I made a custom battle and tried a headshot and it crashed too.
When I got home I tried playing singleplayer while my computer is connected to the Internet.  Sooth sailing.  No problems whatsoever.

Really weird problem.  Has anyone else had this happen to them?

I'm currently playing in Native with the latest patch, 1.131

Yes, a number of people have had this problem (myself included, I just bought this game over steam a couple days ago).  The game works perfectly fine while online, but not in offline mode- the assumption is that it has to do with some disconnect between the game and steam's servers when you unlock an acheivement (for example, one you get for the first time you kill someone, the game tries to tell steam that you have unlocked an achievement, but there is no steam connected, the game doesn't know how to react so it crashes) though this may be incorrect.  Real problem is that there is absolutely nothing you can do about it but wait and hope for a patch or someone from the community to come up with a work-around. Things I have tried-
Complete Re-download and Re-install over steam,
Refreshing my Steam registry thingy,
I tried enabling cheats, thinking it would cancel-out the achievements,
Put the game on the lowest settings possible,
Switching between direct X modes or what-have-you,
But none of these attempts have made the slightest difference, it'll work fine in offline mode until a unit sustains damage or dies, then it crashes.  If only my gaming computer had an internet connection I suppose it wouldn't be an issue, but perhaps nowdays it is too much to expect to be able to play a game without an internet connection- perhaps that is why not too many people are having this problem.

It may also be an argument for buying the cd version instead- that way you can control what patches are applied (I believe the newest, or next to newest patch is the offender here).  What really worries me is- who exactly is at fault, steam or the developer? If it is somewhere in between can we hope for someone to take the responsibilty of fixing the problem?
Can anybody help?
Please halp!

What you seem to be missing is that you're playing it on two different systems. Try disabling your PC's internet connection and playing that, and if possible connect the laptop to the internet and try it on there too.

Anyway, buying the CD version won't help - that just installs steam. If you want to play without steam, just download the version from the taleworlds website, grab your CD key off steam and throw it in the standalone version.

I believe Mapynix and I have the same problem.  I also bought my copy via Steam.  I didn't think that it might have to do with the achievements they added.  Guess there's nothing to do but wait for them to patch it.

I would never have thought of that, that would seemingly have to work- assuming now that my CD key that came with the steam version works on the taleworlds version, and that my initial use of that CD key through steam didn't invalidate it for use without steam.

Anyway, thanks so much for the help!  I will try downloading it off taleworlds tonight and will post to let people know if it worked.  At least I have some hope anyway!

Uh... you know I can play mount and blade warband ( the steam version ) without being online.
Are you sure your steam version is updated?

Yup.  Read the last line of my original post.  I got ver. 1.131 which is the latest.

Well I don't think it's the latest.

I think Karel means the latest Steam client patch.

Oh.  Sorry, I misunderstood.
There was a Steam client update today.  Maybe said problem is fixed with the update?  I'll try playing again with no Internet connection at school tomorrow between classes and see what happens.

I have the same problem!
I have the latest version of steam and have downloaded all the current updates from steam. But every time I’m not connected to the internet and enter a major town or battle it crashes out! Any ideas? I mean do I have to activate the downloads or something? Cheers dudes!
