Game breaking problems and how to avoid them.

if only I had such an active thinking like you, yet I am more concerned about the red error texts that prevent me from fighting a campaign battle...

So I tried it.  F-commands have no way of breaking the formation

I am using 1.11, but normally in any mod with formations you can either do a "NO FORMATION" command or "charge" command. Either breaks formation, as in, troops of that unit will just be in a big line (not shieldwall, square, wedge, etc).

General position to you will remain, but that is easy to play around.

Well, downgrade to 1.03.  I've heard that it fixes red error glitches fine.

I have a 250 days campaign with 1.11. I started as a freelancer for Castille, then a vassal, I went to the crusades for a couple months and now I am back. We finished the reconquest of Iberia.

I saw very few 'red error texts', not one that was game breaking or that would have a impact on what I was doing so far.

I did some big battles, and apart from 99 reinforcements it all plays quite familiar.  Once I had my companions as horse archers, that is, but the rest is the same.  Huge chaotic mess we all love.

But 99 reinforcements took me by surprise.  We were winning, and winning, and winning and then we lost.  OK, reload time.

And that huge number of separate units, like in With Fire and Sword.  Lots of clicking around to organize them, but it's doable.  As it is right now, I don't have a clue who is any good at what and what level they are.  But I'll figure it out eventually.

Camp -> Mod Options -> Reinf. Waves

Yes, I know, but I left it as is.  Different challenge.

AAAnyway!  I took the Pope prisoner and now the Whole Effing World is at WAR! with me...

What a terrible game design.  I'm lost for words.  It's like DrThomas never played Warband, or what?  On the face of it, it all makes a semblance of sense.  You harm the Pope, we gonna hate you a little for that.  But it's Warband for Christ's sake.  There is no such thing as "hate a little" in this game.  You are either at war or at peace with a faction (minor details notwithstanding).

So I lost the whole session of gameplay with many successful battles.  Seriously, I hoped somebody would tell me that.

People, beware!  Do not take the Pope prisoner, or the whole world will declare war on you!

You took the POPE prisoner? You deserve absolutely everything that is going to happen to you.

You will probably get a huge ransom for him

Any other lord from Papal State works the same.  I guess the game assumes that every catholic kingdom is somehow allied with the Papal State.  All devs did is some minor change in the code, which resulted in this mess.  It's not even funny.

Then it's this morale penalty for mixing religions.  The player does not even know what religion his troops are and which one to disband to get rid of it.  Terrible design again.  Are Pirates any religion?  Is this Whiffu Whaffu southern speermen an orthodox?  I have no idea.

It's a flop all the way.  And my liege even made peace, so I can't finish the job.

Oh, whatever.  Sooner or later the Pope will be gone from my game.

I feeling the same about this matter, it's downright ludicrous to believe that every catholic kingdom would all too eagerly go on a crusade against you, only because you hav e attacked ONE lord of the papal state. Heck, even during the real crusades there were many states that were reluctant and some just downright refused to join, and the perceived threat level probably was a little bit higher with the looming danger of muslims taking over the western world and stuff...
And was there actually at any time a pope who led an army into battle as a commander? That always bothered me, it just feels so out of place (unless someone actually proves this to have happened, then I'll gladly stand corrected).

I don't know, Patrimonium Sancti Petri in its current state is just really not balanced, it should be something that operates from the background and not some actual place where you can go to and play wack-a-mole with their lords (and the pope!). I know this won't be happening because final, but anyway...

The problem isn't so much that nations declare war on you but that they do so without first talking to you to negotiate a diplomatic solution... for example, "release the Pope or we shall declare war."  To suddenly find yourself at war with a kingdom is bad but to not even have a clue as to why is game breaking to me.  I guess this functionality just isn't in the diplomacy mod and probably wasn't needed in core warband since war was always about claiming new territory or responding to a provocation like having attacked a village or caravan.

I have one that I ran into. Searched around and couldn't get an answer.

I was fortifying a manor as a vassal of England and then joined a Crusade. While on Crusade, I guess it finished fortifying, built a castle, and assigned it to the Crusader States. When I left the Crusades my fief remained with the Crusader states.

I guess the only workaround is don't build a castle and then go on Crusade?

Hum I build one before joining, so I would suggest: wait to finish the upgrade before you join the crusades
