ok it does look like that rtr has a small effect when they decide to join you. First of my rtr now is only 53 i have 1000 renown. And i have been hitting the khanate hard after they decide to wage war on me. Every time i beat them in battle don't let them go. Just capture them and stow them in your dungeon. After doing this and almost have all khanate lords in my dungeon i have 2 lords who defected from other kingdoms and joined my side after capturing almost all of khanate castles. At that point i had promoted most of my companions to lords and all have castles now. It does not matter if they are nobles or commoners you will only lose 1 time -4 but that is really small price to pay.

Now when i talk to lords they start like your army weak yada yada but since i have captured most of there lords they still joined me. The only that i have maxed out is persuasion skill so i guess it was that all along. My honor rating is only 8 now.

Hmm, so persuasion is useful after all perhaps? I've put about 4 points into right now...

There is a good bit of randomness to a lord joining your faction, too.  Having persuasion helps, but I don't think it makes a substantial impact.  I could be wrong though.

Pretty sure your chance of successfully recruiting a lord is based upon: Persuasion, their personality, the argument you use (should match why they are pissed at current liege), some sort of 'Consistency Check', and probably some other random calculation by the game. Oh, and I think RtR as that is a measure of your legitimacy to be a liege worthy to have vassals. Dunno if renown is factored in, but probably is...(at least a little)

Oh yeah, pursuasion makes a big difference for me.  I never got any to join until I leveled it up, now I have pretty reasonable success.

In addition to what CounterPoint mentioned, the proximity of the fiefs they own in relation to your borders (especially if they hold castles/city), and the relative military might of both realms.
