so, i have been playing mount and blade for quite some time now (i discovered it when 960 just came out) and i have one nooby question;

1)IS THERE ANYWAY TO PREVENT FRESH BEEF FROM COW/CATTLE FROM ROTTING?

Thanks Gunrunner

i just started 1.003. Every time i try to use fresh beef it rots much to soon to do anygood as food for my party. I just sell asap now.

Shouldn't there be a way to combine meat with a barrel of salt and get salted meat which will not rot?

Well, there isn't. Beef slowly rots and you can do nothing about it.
It can be, however, quite profitable stuff if you but it in villages at eleven denars or so and then sell them at around hundred in cities.

There should be a way of turning it into the Dried Beef. Salt or not.

If you store beef in a chest (like you have in a castle/town) it will not rot.
I always keep a supply of fresh meat this way...

I don't bother with the stuff myself, unless I happen to loot some. Waste of denars, it's rotten within a few days and totally useless.

I agree.

The salt should have a use, too, besides for anointing that superstitious whatshisface Hero pre-hire.

well, if you buy meat for 11 denar and sell it for 500, i wouldn't say thats a waste...
made over 100k in less then a week that way

yep, leave it on the cow .....

find a village with a lot of cattle for sale cheaply, drive the herd from city to city "converting" some cattle into fresh meat for selling as you get near.

It seems, that in Caladria they invented effective refrigerators quite early

Easy, while you're raiding some innocent villages, take those meats along and smoke it and voila - beef jerky

well speed of the cattle prevents me from traveling too far, so just whatever city is close, I have sold a bunch in Nord and Vaegir country for rougly 100 pr meat (200 pr cattle)

i find the best way to do cattle trade runs is with an army of about 50ish soldiers, this way most bandits/raiders will run from you and you can easily take your time herding the cattle around (unless you are at war you might want a bigger army to scare the enemy lords as well)

a great way to find cheap cattle is to look for those meat that sell for 11 denar at villages. don't buy the meat, go to the village and buy cattle which sells for 22 denar a pop. (if you buy the meat first the cattle price will go up...) Thanks to TheMageLord for that tip  (btw you should look for his tweak to make cattle follow instead of running from you which is a must IMO)

another tip is to do quests for guild masters in towns and when you get the drive cattle to X quest accept it, but don't bring the cattle to its destination. just herd it around (you can trade while you do this) until the timer is up and then enjoy a free herd of 100 cattle at the cost of a couple relation points with the town you got the quest at (thanks to..someone, i don't remember his name who gave this tip on another post)

and btw, when war is raging and lots of villages get looted meat prices go sky high, in my game i had towns buying my fresh meat for up to 500 Denar a pop (in villages they would sell for over 800 but they never have gold lol).
