Freeform games

My favorite thing about Mount and Blade is the freedom. I love games that provide a world you can interact with, and not just a story to whip through. Making your own story is much more fun. On this note I'd like to make a list of games which give you a lot of freedom, so far the only games I can really think of are:

Mount and Blade (It has to be on the list...)
Privateer (http://priv.solsector.net/downloads.htm for a good remake)
Hardwar
Sword of the Samurai
Darklands
Elite
The Elder Scrolls games

and... that's about all I can think of right now... anyone else know of any good freeform games?

whats sword of the samurai?

i thought freelancer was pretty fun. silent hunter 3 also.

Free-form play (or near free-form, anyway):

Freelancer
X2: The Threat

Grand Theft Auto series

SimCity4 (as Blackspirit mentioned), Sims 2, etc.

Pirates of the Caribbean
Vampire: The Masquerade
Neverwinter Nights

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri

All have some sort of free-form play, some much more than others.

I would say that UnReal World would fit into this category. Good luck getting it to work on XP though... Actually, do rogue-likes count? Most of the ones I know of are freeform, or at least have freeform elements.

How did I forget about Pirates?! I used to play the original constantly, but I doubt my computer could handle the remake. I've been trying to get my hands on a copy of the original for awhile now, I have (downloaded) the Pirates! Gold remake, but that's just crap compared to the original.

Rougelikes are great fun too (they tend to have confusing interfaces though...). You could probably use DosBox to get UnReal World to run.

Anyone have a download for sword of the samurai? It looks interesting

I think Underdogs took it off. I could be wrong, but I know for sure that www.abandonia.com has it. Also, DosBox runs it perfectly, though it runs fine in XP also, with some infrequent crashing.

Most historical simulation games made by KOEI like Uncharted Waters, Pacific Theater of Operations, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and a ton more, and almost anything by Sid Meier.

Why wouldn't they count?

Unreal World.

In what other shareware game can you break your leg and spend a month shivering under a branch shelter waiting for it to heal?

Well, yes, that is a good selling point, but what about the game
