The map reflects the findings of Freedom House's survey Freedom in the World 2007-2008. For each country, the survey provides a concise report on political and human rights developments, along with ratings of political rights and civil liberties. Based on these ratings, countries are divided into three categories: Free (green), Partly Free (orange), and Not Free (red), as reflected in the map. Map based on BlankMap-World-v5.

██ Free (90)

██ Partly Free (60)

██ Not Free (43)

Shifted a bit.

I should image you have quite a bit of freedom in Siberia...
Wrong, it's Russia.

Interesting to see The Papal State in Rome being grey  :???: - I suppose they didn't want to categorise it as 'red'

Very interesting find there, M@ster!

Kyrgyzstan is freer than all other Central Asian states are. And I can guess why.

There is American air base in Kyrgyzstan's capital - Bishkek

Ok, I admit being a bit rough, but still, I wouldn't actually consider Israel with it's walls to triumph in civil liberties.

The definition of freedom is the traditional liberal idea of freedom from something (like the state or a dictator e.g.)
rather than the social democratic idea of freedom to something (having a job and pursuing your interests e.g.).

A social democrat would say that a country with enormous poverty - differences in wealth - would be inhabited with a majority of people
being enslaved by poverty. Whereas a liberal person would say that any person in a country with free elections and a free press etc. would be free.

To a social democrat many more countries - and thereby people in the world - would not be free.

But the citizens of Israel are considered free, no matter how hostile they are.
Just like the CIA have installed dictators throughout the world and yet USA is still (considered) a democracy.

There's a civil liberties map below.
One can define as much as one likes, but separating people with walls is far from freedom.

It depends on your point of view. The Palestinians consider themselves locked out,
whereas the Israelis consider themselves locked in - as in: protected from those outside.
In that way the majority of Israelis like the wall and consider themselves - to a higher degree - free from terror.

Suicide bombing attacks on your cities and towns have a way of making you want to prevent them from happening again. I know, it's weird and irrational, isn't it?

When another option would be to give people equal rights and take away any reason to perform such attacks by that, I must say it sounds wierd and irrational. Plus wrong.

Nice theory you have there. Too bad it's just a theory. The idea that equal rights would somehow solve all problems is a fantasy.

Heh, in my country, there would be instant riots if the Prime Minister insisted on equal rights.

The fact that Russia is bright red demonstrates error in the map.

I agree, who ever did this survey? was being ****-licked by Americans.

What are you babbling about?
There's no free press, journalists are being assassinated,
political opponents are being threatened and in general civil liberties are being oppressed.
Plus: "European institutions who observed the December 2007 legislative elections
concluded that these were not fair elections". (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elections_in_Russia)

The entire country is being lead by KGB methods (of which Putin was a former member).

Adorno 说:

There are some free press, not too much of course, but there are.

Adorno 说:

Nope. It's the other way around - civil laws are being oppressed.

Giving them easy access to their targets, what an excellent idea. I'm sure they'll be so grateful that terrorism and hatemongering will start to dissipate immediately. They probably won't use this opportunity for even more attacks nor see it as a reason to continue to get even more. Forgot the Disengagement already?
