Fort Reeve quest bugged

I took a quest from a fort reeve in one of my forts, the quest is named, "Recover a lyre stolen from fort reeve of dun foither". Basically to finish this quest you find this stolen item, it may in one of 5 nearby towns listed in the quest log. The first village I checked, I somehow finished the quest by talking to the head of the village, even though I did not get the item (the lyre).

In the quest log it says that I have completed the quest and that I should go hand it in. However, when I go to talk to the fort reeve it is as if I have not completed the quest, as there is no option to hand it in. I also can't abandon it and there is no expiry date on the quest because it is marked as completed. Basically I can't improve my relations with that fort via quests from the reeve anymore.

(if you have one after you got the quest, but before you visited that village, add it too)

also, are you playing on Windows, Linux or Mac?

Unfortunately I attempted the mission, because I didn't think that it would bud, so I don't have the savegame from before trying the mission.
