when making formations in tight locations in multiplayer it changes my formation to a tighter one, is there a way to make the formation wide again?

Yes. Press F1, Click LMB and drag the formation to your liking. It will then move them to this formation then use F1 > F1 to move it again to where you like.

When this happened I just changed my tactics to suit the ball of men rather than the line...

In Beta Sometimes with archers they ball up together it's a bug I think. Only way to get they separated is by doing loose formation or realigning Face direction.
