formation improvement for larger groups?

in "guard this place" mode, larger groups tend to clump together in a close bunch: missile troops, cavalry, infantry mixed. the result: the missile troops do not fire... would it be possible to improve the formation code so it would place missile troops in front of others also for larger battle sizes? it seems to work with the smallest size only in the current version.
