Why do these composers become nearly forgotten?

For example, Muzio Clementi, great composer, inspired one of Mozart's greatest operas.

Rarely thought of today, mostly find his sonatas in 'beginner books'
Thoughts?

Quote on youtube  :)

"Clementi is a charlatan, like all Italians. He marks a piece presto but plays only allegro." (W.A. Mozart)

I have never heard of him.

Personally I think Pierre Schaeffer is forgotten, or is it just me? The 'father' of Musique Concrete
- expanding the concept of music to a point where you ask: "is it music?"

Scarlatti, somewhat forgotten, pioneer of modern keyboard technique, Clementi further refined it for the modern pianoforte, especially legato and such.

Pierre Shaeffer.....I'm not a fan, never liked that type of "music"
I can't really consider it music, at least in the traditional sense that I view it.

These artists served their time, it is folly to try to remember every creator in our past. Their legacies evidently endure, their names are unimportant when flesh turns to ash.

Society changes.

Notable composers were overshadowed by the genius composers of their time.  Same today--there are many truly remarkable artists of whom the masses never hear.  That's why I feel so lucky when I walk into a small-town club and listen to musicians who are every bit as good or better than most who've been popularized.

In the end, everyone and everything will be forgotten.  We are only important to ourselves.  Humanity is an ephemeral triviality in the bigger picture of things.

Ashes to ashes and dust to dust but everyone is going to love the Wilhelm Tell Overture and the Flight of the Valkeries forever. I don't think the great composer M&Ms will come up with stuff like that.
