I always play at normal damage levels and AI tactics and strategy set to good (highest setting).  I consider playing without horse to be hard.  There is limited opportunity for the player to make a big difference in battles that matter which always will be battles against heavy cav. enemies.  In those battles, the infantry/archer player will struggle just to keep alive or have to hide in a corner somewhere.  Sure you can kill a horse with a swing (unless it's a Netherworld Charger) but what about the second horse coming right behind with a lance?  What about the third?  And what about the other horse coming from behind and the one coming from the side?

I wonder how infantry/archer players deal with Jatu armies.  Sure use the terrain, but has any faced Jatu on flat terrain?  What was that like?

A bloody massacre, that's what.

Read a post in another thread that the only way to effectively fight the Jatu was to get a river map and place your army in the water.  :/

Try playing without a horse and lance.

Just get a Pendor Great Sword, an axe, and a bow.  No shield, but who cares, you kill horses with one swing, and usually their riders too.

I mean, from the start, with all difficulty, with auto-save

Truly the way Pendor should be played.

To keep with the "experienced players only" hard spirit of the mod, anyway.

I remember Prophesy of Pendor beeing harder in the Mount and Blade version, it seems that the new animations make the AI somewhat slower.

True Pendorians play on the hardest settings, largest battle sizes, wear paper thin armor, and stare death in the face.  And never, ever, survive the first volley of projectiles from across the map.

Sairtar Underdark knocked unconscious by peasant.

Paper thin armor? Like what?

Yeah, 1 volley can kill you, Thats so realistic!

Imho every M&B:W mod including PoP played with normal damage offers a bad simulation of armour, except perhaps Blood and Steel. The damage is simply too high when wearing the better armour.

I more or less started M&B:W with Brytenwalda und PoP, after having played vanilla two years ago for just an hour, so I cannot say wether PoP is much harder than vanilla. For me it was hard and frustating in the beginning with a new character. Meanwhile I cheat insofar, as I give one of my comrades 9 Pathfinding from the start. After I've found him, heart attacks and destruction of keyboards become less.

I find that this wonderful mod is not hard to play, but hard to play properly.

If you don't plan ahead, your late game will be really hard. If you don't farm reputation with the lords, you will have a hard times getting vassals. If you don't farm tournaments, you will have hard time geting enough money to skyrocket yourself into the mid game. If you don't solo parties from the begining, if you dont crush big armies with a much smaller party, you will have less renown, and therefore, a much smaller party-size for the late game.

I haven't found the best way to play this mod corectly yet.

No one has mentioned Syla Uzas yet. He comes with an immense army filled with Immortals (elite top tier knighthood order infantry) that just turn your army into mincemeat and if that weren't enough he also has Shadow Legion Centurions (heavy knighthood order cavalry on steel-plated horses with heat-seeking javelin-missiles) that will take care of the rest.

Indeed, i learned that the hard way. I would put him up there as the most dangerous army in PoP, and that's saying a lot. Who ever is responsible for Syla's troop composition is truly sadistic!

All that talk of Eyegrim made me think of my first encounter with a Demonic Magni...

Behold what a single unhorse magni did! He was the last opponent and he just kept cutting them down.

But Syla probably scares me more. And depending on my battlesize Maltise.

Difficult?

A single Demonic Magni swarmed by troops from the infantry focused faction killed all those people singlehandedly. Yeah difficult.
Syla on the other hand essentially has an army consisting almost exclusively of Knight Order troops combining some of the most brutal horsemen with the most brutal shock infantry.
Something about Maltises army is only really effective for me on larger than normal battlesizes.

The problem with Syla is that he uses high tier Empire troops, all of which have throwing spears.  We aren't talking about throwing axes from Vanskerry units here... we're talking about ****ing Jarids.  Jarids are the Crossbow of throwing weapons, they will pierce plate with ease and kill your ass.

That just contributes to their lethality.  And that's why I hate taking on Empire castles, because those Jarids take down shields, as do the crossbowmen.  I cannot TELL you how many of those idiots I picked away at with my bow, and I still took high casualties.

Right now I'm with the Kingdom of Ravenstern (it's my first game in PoP).  For my next save (which I cannot wait for) I definitely plan to be primarily using Empire troops + get Immortals.  The defense abilities of these units is just amazing.

Empire troops die REALLY quickly though.  Their Gladiators drop like flies under fire.  And if you have to be on the offensive, the Armored Crossbows are required for supporting the offense, otherwise they'll get spread out and picked off by archers and cavalry.  It's scary how quickly the formation falls apart.  ._.

Immortals though, when on defense, can just smash anything.  I've watched 30 of them take down Knights of the Lion and Sarleon Knights in all of about 20 seconds.  And there were roughly forty Knights.  Offense too, they can pull their weight.  But NEVER tell Empire troops to charge.  Critical error that kills their efficiency.  Their lethality is numbers.

Charging is for when you get them close enough.

This is just my opinion though.  XD
