Footslogging VS Horseback

Is that even a thing in Bannerlord? I've lost the same horse at least 100 times and nothing ever happened. I started using the thing as a 4 legged mantlet on open maps.

You're really lucky then, it happens often enough for someone to make a mod for it.

I would like to fight on foot more often but it is way more difficult with the way mass combat currently works. VS bandits or disordered it can be fun but soon as you face a mob of models they insta gib your shield and then you because every single model in weapon range attacks at max speed repeatedly. That means usually 4-6 attacks every other second doing avg 50 damage on real damage- shields last thru 2 rounds of attack and are gone. The clipping and constant swings also impede your own attacks.

You can 'fight' with your men but that mostly consists of having 3 shields and 1 weapon and serving as a blocker, staying on the edge of the fight and picking off strays, using a glaive or some large two handed weapon to swing wildly over the heads of your fellows (no worries about friendly damage) or leave your horse in the back, fight dismounted vs the initial cavalry rush commanding your soldiers more precisely while being less of a target- then once most of the enemy cavalry is down, mount up and get your soldiers to advance while you skirmish out distracting the enemy and making it slightly easier for your men until the enemy breaks and you get 10-20 kills in the pursuit.

Fighting in the line for the whole battle is really impossible as more than a blocker on realistic damage. With lowered damage and 3 shields in rotation you can do it for most of a battle.

Ranged weapons exist. Have you ever tried them?

Well, considering we are a vip and the tactical mastermind of our force, and if you don't have a horse equipped your campaign movement speed is a crawl, I'd say the most logical outcome is going to be from horse back.

Now, if it wasn't for the campaign movement speed bit, I'd consider making a foot based combatant but alas, we can't count as one of those people who are an infantry that rides a stored horse.
just keep horses in your inventory, you still get athletics instead of horse riding skill but your map speed increases.
same works for your men, so having 50 horses in your inventory if you have 50 men greatly increases your map speed, even if those men are infantry men.

In my army, when we go to actual combat (not for looters training) there's no troops without horses. Horse archers only. So, usually no need to fight on feet.

On the other hand, sometimes I do feel that dismounting all the troops and welcoming enemy's meat wave with volleys of arrows is more effective.

Yes but even then you still lose about an entire point or point and a half of map speed. I acknowledged this in the second line of the post you quoted.

i assume the 1 - 1.5 point(is it really that much? never payed attention to it) of speed loss is because the infantry is not trained at riding horses, makes sense to me that they would be slower.

in the end it all comes down to what role you want to fill in the army. if you are going to fight alongside your infantry than it makes sense to not have a horse, if you will fight with your cavalry than you need a horse aswell.

having a horse yourself makes little difference for campaign speed if your army is made up of infantry and you have no horses for them.

personally i stand with my archers, makes it easier to command my troops, on my horse i would need to steer all the time while issuing orders, it is much easier to do while standing still (on a hill with a good overview of the battle so i can see if my cav has reformed before i order them to charge again and stuff like that).

i do not have a horse equiped so i start every battle on foot (saves me pressing a few buttons to get off the damn beast), i have my horse in my inventory together with as many horses as my infantry need.

Almost all players are using ranged weapons because it is far easier. Headshotting 20+ per battle with a bow vs trying to get more than 5 kills if you fight on foot with your line is a hugely different experience. I have different gear loads for what I intend to do- hideout is usually 2 shields, glaive, and short sword if I have decent troops, if I am doing it mostly myself then bow 2 quivers and a shield. You can use ranged weapons immediately for aim and just miss out on some damage for lack of proficiency.

Longest one handed sword I can find on horseback. As long as you don't charge into a spear I find it pretty safe way to go about things.

If I am reading this right, you prefer putting yourself at a disadvantage on foot, basically.

Peasant tip: you can switch your inventory right before you go into battle (when the menu pops up for you to fight, retreat, surrender, etc.). So you can hoof it on foot on the campaign map to get endurance XP, bit jump on your horse pre-battle to slay from the saddle. Or vice versa.

Just swtiched back to horseback from doing foot fighting a whole playthrough... Imo you simply can't get durable enough to actually fight in the front lines, armor doesn't seem very effective and you can't get more health so I always end up dying when I try to active engage the enemy.

So why don't you sit with your archers and fight from range?
