Fog of War?

On the world map, there is no way to tell how far your player can see, it's just that units will phase into view when you get close enough. How about greying (not fully black) out the area that your party can't see? Sort of like in an RTS.

I think that's a terrible idea. I HATE the so called Fog of War. Actually, my hero has a set of powerful binoculars so he can see everywhere quite clearly!! :D

I don't want the fog to be so dark that it is black. I want it to be slightly grey. Those who have played Age of Empires would understand.

I don't think there should be fog for the sake of limiting your vision, if there is to be fog, it should be part of a weather system, one that doesn't always put fog around.

If you look outside your window, you'll see that you can actually look quite far and there's no fog blocking your way (unless the weather is bad).

Yes, but when I look out my window I can also see people for miles. They don't just appear when they come into a 10 metre range from me. :D

I hate fog of war, too. It's just kind of ugly. Norph, is your suggestion that at the limit of your vision, there should be some sort of circle that shows the border of where you can see? I think that idea might be alright, provided the ring isn't too obtrusive.

However, as far as priorities go, I think the system in place right now is fine. There are plenty of more important things that can be worked on.

With the spotting distance varying with the spotted unit's size, what size should be the ring ?

I have no qualms with the current system

Indeed. Right now, spotting gives you a variable view range, depending on what you're viewing. Fog of war - while applicable in earlier versions - just wouldn't work at all now.

sure it would. You can see terrain clearly for a certain distance, beyond that is light grey, unless you've never been there, in which case its dark grey and opaque (or very close to). just within the terrain range is the first place you would spot your easiest target. and so on.

what about black and white like on old days pictures

you still can see it but without the colors

so what you can see is with colors =)

and what you can't see is without colors

That's a cool idea. More shaders=win ^^

Maybe Manu's statement needs a little expanation.

Okay, say there's an army of 100 people out there. They're far easier for you to spot than, say, a couple of bandits, so you can see large groups when they're farther away, and small groups when they're closer.

This means that any type of fog of war is impossible to implement. It's far more realistic as it is now.

Well I wouldn't mind a Fog of War of a fairly basic sort. IMHO a weakness in the game at the moment is that it's a little tedious moving around the map, dodging Dark Knights notwithstanding. That'd be improved if there was more to see and perhaps do while you're traveling, but it'd also be improved, at least at first, by adding a feeling of mystery and exploration to travel.

I wouldn't have a black or severe looking FOW, I'd just take all the cities, salt mines, bandit lairs and the like off the map until you discovered them. Instead you'd just see the natural geography of the land, and if you needed directions you'd be able to get them from merchants, wandering peasants and the like.

Anyway, it might be too much effort for too little result but I get the feeling a bit of initial exploration would improve people's first impressions of the game.

Hrm... well, I like that implementation of fog of war... just to show you where you've explored, not to show you how far you can see other units or whatever. It would add to the exploration element of the game, and dodge the fog of war problems that I cited above.
